So as it was popular last year, thought it be nice to have a Photo&Video forum retrospective from 2011 smile

So please post your top 5 (and just 5) from this year!

And so to kick things off...

It's not easy to pick just 5 shots, but I think we've had some awesome work posted this year so I'm really interested to see what everyone picks smile

Top work as ever FPC.

Been a strange year this year as having moved to an entirely new area early in the year I've had lots of new things to photograph, in fact over a third of my Flickr stream has been taken in the last 10 months! Been to some amazing places and seen some wonderful things this year as well so it's been really hard to narrow down 5 shots I really love, but I think what I've chosen is some of my best from the year and also best represents the year I've had.

January: Still working in London and meeting some weird and wonderful people.

SteamPunk 08 by dogsey, on Flickr

June: Settled into our new house and making the most of the surroundings.

Cooling her feet by dogsey, on Flickr

August: One of a few trips into South Wales brings us to Waterfall Country - and a first use of my welding glass.

Misty Water - B&W by dogsey, on Flickr

Early September: Finally coming face to face with the locals we'd most wanted to meet.

Wild Boar 04 by dogsey, on Flickr

Late September: A trip away with friends, spending most of the night drinking far too much and still getting up for the sunrise. Mind you, I went back to bed until breakfast time!

I had three or four others that could just have easily been used ... I reserve the right to come back and change my mind at some point!

2011. Well its been quite a year. A couple of major earthquakes, a close relative dying, winning a big photo competition. Its been a year of survival and making the most out of things & re-evaluating whats important. I've updated my website , I've joined flickr properly and I've bought no significant camera equipment all year!

I've found it quite difficult to pic 5 shots from the year as so much has happened, but syaing that here are my top 5 for whatever reason.

Well as to my fav 5 shots of the year...

No1. This was a spectacular winters morning in Hagley park. I was going to shoot a sunrise over lake Victoria but (due to the sept quake) it was an empty muddy hole full of heavy machinery.. This shot from the other side of the lake and heavily cropped. Not quite the award winning edit but very close..

Misty Hagley Park sunrise 3 by robjdickinson, on Flickr

No2. This one was taken just days before the June 6.3 when we had been advised of a high chance of another significant quake. That one almost got me, I was in my car at the time and a handful of meters either way I would have been squished. Such a beautiful country but not without its risks! Shot with a bunch of filters and one out of about 200 shots all very similar

Beautiful to a fault by robjdickinson, on Flickr

No3. Tayors Mistake at dawn. Ash high in the atmosphere fro the Chilean volcano closed down airports all over the place and turned the sky an apocalyptic red. made for some fantastic photos if not quite believable colour. One of these made a best of seascapes list and generated some traffic to my flickr.

Taylors Mistake by robjdickinson, on Flickr

No4. Shagpile seascape. We saw the works of man crumble into dust. Works that had existed for no more than a blink in geological terms. Shag rock had stood there for many 10's of thousands of years yet couldnt stand through 2.2g's of acceleration February 22nd. A once iconic local natural landmark is changed forever.

Shagpile Seascape by robjdickinson, on Flickr

No5. The glory of Arrowtown. This is Autumn at its finest in New Zealand. Its a little chocolate boxy but I love the feel of it.

The Glory of Arrowtown ~Explored~ by robjdickinson, on Flickr

No6. Ok I picked 6. This from my photo a day for July, 31 days and I attempted something different technique wise every day. Sometimes it worked sometimes not quite. This was some ligth painting and a nightime long exposure.

It's even harder to pick 5 than it is 1! Also, there's some shots from 2011, which would have definitely made it in here, that I'm still not allowed to post!!

Great idea for a thread. I feel like 2011 has been a real step forward for me in photography terms. I got my first DSLR, got into editing, did a 2nd 365 and probably took about 15,000 shots!

Difficult to pick a top 5, but these are what I consider my favourites smile

Some of my favorites haven't been published yet so can't go up frown

The year got off to a great start with the 8 Ball Diner opening and my photos covering the walls and windows. I really must get back there for a visit.

The Hot Rod Hayride was an much fun as ever, and I always come back with photos I treasure. This is one of my favs from this year...

I was doing a shoot of a 700 bhp Pro Street Cresta and we took it to the drive through Burger King to show it getting used on the street. As we came out I saw these kids looking on in amazement, I hope there are some future Hot Rodders there....

a review of the year wouldn't be complete without a shot from the Rhythm Riot which was a blast. Getting to meet George Barris was a bonus too....

This isn't partiuclarly an amazing photo but it shows my car, my wife and my son and we were down at Jack Hammer dropping off copies of my book for sale so it has significance for me...

This year I feel I have improved my photo composition, but have plenty more to learn and improve on the PP side. Photography is a hobby for me but I managed to sell 2 pics (and been paid) and have some pics up with Getty. Also managed front cover of Lancashire Life mag, and a page inside that I was chuffed with. I have a few places and compositions and ideas in mind for the New Year, and cant wait for a break in the weather to try them out. Anyway my top 5 as follows:

1.
Taken well after the sun had disappeared, I started to pack the gear away, turned around for a last glance and had to dig the camera out again.

Silhouettes at Tewet Tarn by paulsflicker, on Flickr

2.
Taken on a wet and horrible day, but pleased with the comp on this.

Scaleber Force by paulsflicker, on Flickr

3.
Another one taken after the sun had disapeared, walking back to the car.

Ullswater Sunset by paulsflicker, on Flickr

4.
Another camping trip in the Lakes and up for a pee at 3.00AM. Went back to grab the camera and stayed up for an hour.

Misty morning by paulsflicker, on Flickr

5.
And probably my fav for the year.

It was so much easier picking my single favourite shot from this year, adding only 4 more is no easy feat, but here goes...

Magic Pixie Dust

The obvious starter for me is my fav shot of the year, taken back in the middle of a cold and snowy Bavarian winter (January to be precise). I was working in a little city called Landshut which is around an hour North East of Munich, and had already exhausted all the local photo opportunities the previous couple of weekends and decided to venture a little further afield.

The Saturday I hit Konigsee and Hintersee which lie right in the very South East corner of Germany where it meets up with Austria (the area is known as Bereschtesgaden), and the on the Sunday it was a trip to the fairytale-esque Neuschwanstein Castle a couple of hours drive away. I'm a stickler for taking the small "landstrasse" roads when travelling through rural parts of Germany as you find some amazing gems hidden away that the main roads and autobahns whizz you right past, and that particular day was a special one...minus 15c or so, ice particles flying through the air, burning your face as they hit you, but well worth it when standing with this awesome little church sitting out in the middle of snow covered fields and the North face of the alps in the background.

The Emergence

Fast forward to June, and I found myself back out in Oregon with work for what was initially a couple of weeks (and ended up turning into 6 months). The first couple of weekends I assumed were going to be my only chance to visit some of the places I loved from last years trip as well as a handfull of places that I somehow missed out when scouring maps, photo sites, tourist guides and every other conceivable option.

Nestled in the gloomy pages of a local website I found 2 photographs which the tog had shot almost 20 years ago on film and had scanned in to show on his extremely dated website, the description simply read "John Day". With no sign of life in the pic I hoped that an internet search would come up with some usable info, and sure enough I discovered "The Painted Hills", which lie deep in the heart of Oregon, hidden away from the eyes of many locals never mind tourists.

The next weekend I was off early doors and after a four and a half hour drive I arrived at the Painted Hills section of the John Day park. Don't get me wrong, the hills themselves are amazing, every single pic you take with changing light from the sun shows different colours emerging, a truly awesome spectacle...BUT...a short driver further into the hilly landscape let me feast my eyes on the "Painted Cove", a huge mound of vibrant, red clay which has emerged from it's desertlike surroundings due to national erosion over thousands of years (much like their hilly brothers next door). What made this shot even more special was the awesome cloud formation above, which added to "The Emergence" name I gave the shot.

The Emergence by www.bazpics.com, on Flickr

Desert Sunset

After scoring the shot of the Painted Cove earlier in the day I was sure that it was going to be the shot of the day for me, but Oregon had other plans in store for me that didn't come to light (literally) until the sun began to head for the horizon.

The day was a paricularly clear one as we drove through the "high desert" area, with the clouds beginning to light up with colour, and by clear I mean that from the high vantage point we could clearly make out Mount Hood to the North West, Mount Jefferson almost due West and the Three Sisters to the South West - all huge mountains in the Cascade Range, and more importantly several hundred miles apart which shows how good the visibility was.

Oregon's High Desert is a fickle place, nothing really there at all except for a few farms dotted about, and small roads which wind their way around the hummocks that seem to appear out of nowhere, so finding the right vantage point in time to stop, set up the gear and capture the sunrise was critical.

For around 50 minutes I stood perched on top of a recent rockfall capturing the sunset unfold. Thankfully the coyotes that I could hear from almost every direction elected to stay at their respective patches and watch the sunset too (Mrs Baz did a runner for the car when they all started howling in sync).

Desert Sunset - 17 by www.bazpics.com, on Flickr

Hint Of Light

A month later July was nearing an end and I was still working out in Oregon and getting used to the fact that I would spend the next few months out there too, so I decided to revisit one of my favourite places anywhere on the planet, Crater Lake.

Crater Lake is an amazing spectacle during daylight hours, but having done that twice already it was time to up the ante somewhat. A full day there, yup, that sounded about right...

For many the shots they remember of Crater Lake are those with a dusting of snow on the rim of the crater, the vivid blue pigments in the water reflecting the suns rays...but for me it's this shot, by a mile and then some.

Standing over 8000ft, on a supervolcano, at the very edge of 6 mile wide caldera with not a single other person around, with the stars glittering away above and absolute silence, and by absolute I mean I could hear my own heart beat...nothing, nada, just me and this huge volcano sitting there waiting, for the sun to rise.

Only word I keep using to describe that feeling I had is "EPIC"!

Crater Lake Trip - 2 - Hint Of Light by www.bazpics.com, on Flickr

Glacier Point

The final shot from my personal top 5 from 2011 is also one that I had in my mind to capture this year, having first stood at the very same spot 9 years earlier, in complete amazement at what lay before me. My 3.1Mp camera didn't do the place any justice at all, so this time round I went equipped with my 60D and various lenses, my trusty Sony R1 workhorse (for capturing the vivid colours on show), and my GoPro for some timelapse stuff.

I think by now I've written enough shmoo about the shots that have come before, so I'll let this photo do the talking for itself...

Glacier Point by www.bazpics.com, on Flickr

In my eyes 2011 is definitely the year that I finally managed to hone my landscape photography skills, which is a large departure from the 10 years of shooting every weekend for various car mags that I did previously.

Here's hoping 2012 will produce some new gems for all of us...

Some outrageously good (and varied) work already in this thread, congrats all.

2011 was my first foray into DSLR ownership, have tried to pick a selection of different shots for my favourites. Looking forward 2012 with an expanded equipment list and some varied subjects, have high hopes for Rome over NYE.

In no particular order.

Fantastic pics everyone so far.

2011 has been a great year for me, learnt a lot more and started to try my hand at landscapes more, also picked up some tips about composition.
Had a lot of pics in PVW magazine which is a nice step in the right direction.

So, my top 5:

Some great pictures on this thread, truly inspiring. 2011 was the year that I decided to start sharing some of my pictures publicly. Photography is very much a hobby for me. I don't have the time or the dedication to take it a step further, infact I'm still to get in the habit of starting to carry my camera.

Anyway here are my top five for this year in no particular order.

The Golden Web by Douglas A.L.Young, on Flickr

This one was taken during the first weekend of October when we had summer. This was my first foray into getting up with the sole purpose of taking some pictures. I was very pleased with the results.

This one is one of my personal favourites and was taken at the same time. I was pleased with the composition and that I took the shot rather than the camera.

A Tranquil Morning by Douglas A.L.Young, on Flickr

This one is probably my most satisfying shot that I've taken this year. It was worth getting up at 5am for.

An Oxfordshire Sunrise by Douglas A.L.Young, on Flickr

This one is of my wife and daughter in the distance walking along a very windy beach. I'll admit that it's probably a bit over done in PP but I found the results of the sky truly stunning.

Costa Calma, Fuerteventura 2011 by Douglas A.L.Young, on Flickr

The last one was taken in Kintyre. Myself and my three brothers in law had attempted to walk the Kintyre Way but we had to abandon our quest after 3 days and 65 miles due to various injuries and ailments affecting us all. I took this shot as we were leaving.

So the first couple have to come from the most photogenic holiday I've ever been on. We went to Singapore and Lankawi in Malasia for two weeks in May.
