"Uncle Dave" shutting down

Hi PH !

In many threads here, I have seen pictures of all sorts, hosted by the "Uncle Dave" site.
As I have no photobucket/facebook/other account to upload ictures,
I have sometimes thought of using this great service for PHers, but did not do so.
Today, I have read this on his site :

"After a bloody long time online,
from October 2008 I will be unable to maintain this website
as I am starting full time drinking/studying at University.

Due to my rather low cash flow/debts,
I will no longer be able to fund the hosting costs for all the images uploaded here.
All your currently uploaded images will still be available online.
After October, I will try and keep the site alive as long as possible.
After this, the upload facility will no longer be available and images may eventually by removed from the server.

Thanks for your support over these years, and to my army of fans.
Dave."

Any sponsors around here, or anybody else willing/able to do host the existing pictures ?

Never heard of an uncle dave site.

Good that he has given advanced warning tho, people can put their pics elsewhere now incase they don't have a back up of them.

Bugger, I have all my pics with Dave, have offered a couple of times to send a small contribution to help cover costs but I'm buggered if I know how to do that from here (don't have paypal)
Must send him another email and see if he has another suggestion. Spose I could mail a cheque...

Someone must be able to help with this. I can have a chat at work and see if we have a box that could be used, but I couldn't really do much about the technical maintenance of it all. Perhaps one of our sponsors could provide something, eh Jamie?

I have shed loads of space and bandwith that isnt being used so put Dave in touch with me. I can move alll pics over to my web space....and redirect the hosts name to mine free.....!!!!!

Just put all your images on Flickr. It's a million times better than any of the other hosters.

It is but it's a right pain to insert Flickr photos within a PH post whilst adhering to Flickr's terms of service (i.e. that there is a clickthrough from the embedded picture to that picture's Flickr page) - although Flickr gives you an easy code snippet to do this, PH doesn't support it because it is proper HTML. I did ask over in website feedback if this could be sorted but there was no response.

To be honest, it strikes me that if a student has been able to voluntarily host all our pics for so long for free, PH ought to be able to provide a similar service...

Forgive me, but Flickr do provide the url to your photos in whatever size you choose - it's below the HTML code and works just fine & dandy to handle the odd pic linked here...

Indeed they do. However:

It is possible to replicate option 1 using PH url and pic tags, but it's a pain and it would be nice if one could simply copy in the HTML.

Besides which, those with hosted accounts have other photos on there that they don't necessarily want distributed around the whole of PH!

Uncle Dave's site allows a freedom to upload a single image for publication on PH without your privacy being intruded upon
