AJP mileages...

Recent comment on here surprised me.

Apparently 'there are loads' of AJP's being rebuilt?! I was under the (perhaps wrong??) impression that 'failures' were extremely rare. Or even rebuilds cause of massive oil usage etc.

Tell me, please the mileage of your car...

To start...My Cerby (just before i sold!) had done 42k and was pulling extremely well, no engine work, not using a great deal of oil, just the standard for an AJP...

Both mine needed rebuilds at around 45K.

I would say it is a relatively small number being rebuilt - maybe 30 a year? I would expect the number to be rising when ratio'd to the number of miles the cars do these days.

Just interested as i have heard more than a few people say the AJP is very robust. TBH i think 45K is quite respectable.

I do think it is robust - the cars are getting on and so more work will be reqd.
There are probs with 911s, M3s, VW Polo 1.4s, Jags etc etc Mercedes rust like mad etc etc
TVR is unfairly picked on (well it was until the Speed Six!).

its going to be interesting to see what happens when we owners have cars approaching the 45k mark. Will it be un-sellable? I suppose we just drive around making sure we have that £5k safely tucked away.

Don't know if you know this Nicky but its not fair to have a favorite...OK TVR's aren't children but they demand the same amount of attention and cost!

I don't expect it to, but from whats been said on here 45k seems a bit more likely than 145k or 245k.
I'm a big AJP fan, I treat my engine with respect, and I certainly expect mine to last well beyond 45k.

Just my experience which clearly is going to impact my analysis !
How many people are rebuilding AJPs ?
Roughtly how many are they rebuidling per annum each.
What mileages are generally in the classifieds section?
These stats would suggest the answers?

Apology time.......Your comments made me re-read this thread because I couldn't see why you were getting uptight with me, now I can see why. I miss-read Robertjp's post as a list of cars that had required rebuilds, obviously when I re-read it, and noticed my car was on the list, the penny dropped!

Well now it has done about 48k (off the road for three months of summer last year) and still pulls very very well (especially after all the tuning work and ECU stuff after the scaffold pole incident). I have put in about 1.5 litres of oil in 6k but it has recently been switched to 15-50 to up oil pressure and it hasn't used a drop of that stuff.

When I went to see the engine out and stripped I was surprised to see how clean it was inside, a noticable amount cleaner than a stripped speed 6 that looked like the yellow tarred inside of a 50 a day smoker.

Anyhow, she's a keeper so if the engine goes then I will just have to rebuild it and carry on. I don't think you can worry about these things - just enjoy every minute!

As it happens, th Cerbera is tucked up and nursing a hangover after it's jaunt to Le Mans and what's more the 'other TVR' is on the drive awaiting a wash and a blast out this evening!
