Finally managed to do an Alpine pass on a recent trip (did 4 actually), having done the Mont Blanc tunnel for the last couple of years, and having experienced them would recommend them over the tunnel anytime.
I know we were lucky with the weather, but both the roads and the scenery were absolutely stunning.

Going through the tunnels the noise was actually painful if we kept our windows open. It definitely paid to be in front of the roadster rather than behind it when negotiating tunnels.
I didn't actually calculate the mpg as I didn't want to frighten myself!
The Scalextric lookalike photo was taken a few kms from a town called Andermatt. If you follow the link below, it should take you to a zoomed in view in Google Earth, showing the exact place the actual photo was taken (with a thumbnail of the photo showing the spot).
