The fastest production car in the world will soon be available in convertible form. The new Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will boast a removable roof, offering wind-in-the-hair 1001bhp motoring for the first time.

Due to be unveiled at the Pebble Beach Concourse d'Elegance on 16 August in Pebble Beach, California, the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport will use the current car's 16-cylinder, quad-turbo engine and transmission along with "innovative structural solutions" to compensate for the reduction in chassis stiffness.

Why? It'll sell.

I don't see why it's any more of a waste of time than a Carrera GT or McMerc SLR cabrio...

I believe that's a rather misleading statement - I think they only sold them at a loss when R&D costs were taken into account. They make back some of their loss on every car they sell.

Yes, i know that's the case but we were talking £4million on each car when the first few were out. I guess this is a new way of trying to reduce the R&D costs and I know they will use the technology on other cars in the group but I still don't believe they will be making a profit from them.

Well yeah, the whole project was predominantly a PR stunt... doesn't mean they wont try and make back as much of their money as they can though.

How many Veyrons will be built, assuming they are still in production? Is it a limited number (ie Enzo Ferrari, Mclaren F1)?

I don't think their ethos behind the car was even about turning a profit. It was about creating the first production supercar to have over 1000hp.

That gets them into the record books and the chances are that in time they will go up in value like the F1 did, thus retaining the Bugatti name and form.
