Just heard: definitely no radio station.
Whoever was supposed to do it (Haymarket? Classic and Sportscar?) just told the organisers last week that they weren't coming.

Just have to watch the racing then I guess.

Radio Le Mans at the 24hr is an essential to keep up with the race but (for me anyway) the Classic will be about seeing the cars on track and not being too bothered about relative positions.

Just received this email from John Hindhaugh at Radio Le Mans...Fingers crossed:

Glyn,

Thanks for your email. I think it's important to point out that Radio Show Limited - the people behind Radio Le Mans, have never been involved in the radio station at the Classic. Ironically however, your question is incredibly well timed as, only last Friday, the organisers of the Event asked if we could put a station together for them. As you know we already work with the Patrick Peter Organisation for the Le Mans Series.

The contract to provide radio, since the first-ever Classic Event, has been held by Haymarket Publications, the publishers of Autosport and Classic and Sportscar magazines. Unfortunately they have decided not to do so this year. Clearly this news, coming just a couple of weeks before the event, was somewhat of a shock to the Event organisers.

Despite the time constraints - particularly with regard to finding sponsors - we have offered to do the station as we feel an event of such importance deserves proper coverage. We have the equipment and staff ready to go and provide live coverage on Internet and FM, extending the service from what has been the norm until now, that is just the weekend, to Friday practice as well.

The biggest issue to overcome is the French Authority who allocate the radio frequencies for events like this. We make the applications for the Radio Le Mans test day and race week early in the year as the normal turn round time is three months. It's a similar system to what we have in the UK with the licencing committee only sitting every other calendar month. We have passed on the details of our contact to the Classic organisers and suggested that we complete the requisite paperwork, however I have to be honest, I can't see a FM licence being turned around before the event.

Without the FM licence I think the organisers may decide not to do a 'stand alone' Internet service. I should say here that the organisers of the event have done everything possible to turn this regrettable set of circumstances around. Sad to say it seems that we may not be able to rescue the radio station for this year, however, rest assured, we are already talking with the organisers and potential sponsors, with regard to a "Classic" Radio Le Mans service at the next event in 2010.

Totally agree...they have good banter though which will be missed if they can't pull it off.

Would be nice to have Hindy et al there but it's an entirely different event though as it's only short races rather than a 24 hour race.

If there is nothing for 2008 it would be a shame but hopefully being let down by Haymarket this year will mean Radio Show get the gig for 2010 and we will have the pleasure of the same inain, confused, WFT? but highly entertaining coverage we get for the 24hrs every year!

John, it would be great to have the crew there for the Classic, either 08 or 10, with the knowledge you guys have it would bring the whole thing to life, best of luck and i shall be looking forward to seeing the news.
