Everyone seen this?

http://www.transportoffice.gov.uk/crt/repository/I...

On page 21 under required standards no. 6 "6. There must be no exposed part of the vehicle manifold, header pipes,
silencer or Catalyst that can be contacted with a 100mm sphere. See note 2"

Which would outlaw anything with sidepipes. yikes

Apparently it is under appeal "by everyone" so hopefully there'll be some exemptions in there for sevens, cobras etc.

Not a happy bunny.

Why have an exemption? Just delete the damn thing altogether!

I'd suggest some stainless steel covers could get around that quite nicely - the kind that most cobra's have anyway. Only issue then would be the header pipes and manifolds on seven types that exit on the side of the bonnet.

Good answer Davi, just noticed the new wing deal, 50 degrees from centre to rear and 30 to the front, that will be a problem for short wings. See page 159, Draft IVA on my site, dont forget kits are covered by the less problematic BIVA

side exhaust is already forbidden i thought? i mean a side-pipe is ok, but it needs to be re-routed to exit on the rear of the car?

Nope. At the moment you can run an exhaust pretty much how you want! Otherwise pretty much every 7 and cobra out there would struggle.

Didn't we see this when SVA came out? I seem to remember a White Westfield with concealed exhaust and some extra bits of body work.

The external exhaust ruling in the Noise section of IVA draft version 3 has been removed in its entirety.

Is there an up to date version of the IVA document, or is it just the drafts version kicking about still?

Theres no update as yet to the public, Nigel Dean has been in conultation with VOSA on the new proposals. This particular ruling was looked into by Den Tanner and Nigel Dean who came up with objections and managed solely to get this removed. Nigel was informed this morning and supplied version 3 of the iva draft.

Where has that information come from? The 3rd draft I received yesterday from VOSA has a "no exposed exhaust" section in it and refers in note 2 as prevention of burns.

Indeed - the one I linked is called draft 3, dated 31/10/2008.

I was also told (by a manufacturer) that "everyone" in the industry was pushing for its removal, so I'm a bit dubious about it all being down to one or two people from one magazine.

On a slightly related note, I got january' CKC yesterday for the IVA article, but it didn't mention this at all. confused

I am remaining suspicious until we hear it from VOSA, frankly...but I will be more than happy if it has been removed, however it was achieved.

Dang! That's us fooked too then, and not really much chance of a protective skin over the baffle box either as there's not really enough room or mounting points for it.

Its not in final form yet so keep positive, if the exhaust cover rule stops in then a solution will be found. BIVA is not going to be a problem, dont worry, those that can design cars will not be halted due to a rule change.

Hi, first time post, but this is a subject close to my heart as I'll be fitting side exhausts to my Marlin Sportster. So seeing the column in this months Kit-Car Magazine was a great relief:

Good good, unlikely to affect me as my (re)build is already registered, but I'd like to do a scratch build at some point, although it may be the forthcoming single seater which is unlikely to be affected by this based on pictures I've seen so far.
