Before I start, I'm fully expecting 300bhp/ton and the other usual GT-R trolls to jump on this thread and bring in a load of silly mathematics. In fact, there is probably a mathematical formula of theirs to tell me that I had a terrible day instead of a good one - it will be completely wrong though smile

Nissan have set up lots of perks for their early GT-R customers, including a hospitality suite for customers only at the London Motorshow, then there was the tape measure to measure your head for a crash helmet, and that crash helmet was for use with the day I am writing up now.

That day was Sunday 24th August, and I simply cannot believe how well Nissan have looked after their customers! Every perk up until now has been nice, but Sunday was just something else entirely!

I arrived at Silverstone at 12:15pm and followed the GTR signs in the car park all the way to a designated car park for everyone taking part in the race academy (about 20 of us). I was greeted at the entrance and then told to go through to reception. Upon arrival my name was checked and i was given my Arai GT-R crash helmet and told it was mine to keep. It's a £300 helmet (plus the GTR customisations) and has Hans Device posts already installed. Very nice, and all for free.

I was also handed a name badge which put me on the titanium team, a score card, and a pouch containing a 1GB GTR memory card, and a GTR USB memory card reader. I was then told that the card was used to record a video of everything that I did in every car to take home. AWESOME!!!

I sat down at the Titanium table, spoke to a couple of the others and then went to get some food. Lunch was absolutely superb - really good food.

After lunch we were walked upstairs for a short presentation on what the day was about. We were first of all told that Nissan had hired out the BRDC lounge which is the equivalent of hiring the Royal Box at Wembley. It's just about the most exclusive area on any race circuit in the UK.

Nissan had supplied a car in every colour for use that day, and the day was broken down into the following sections:

1) Nissan GT-R sprint circuit
A sprint circuit in the GT-R to see how quickly you can accelerate, brake, and make the car chance direction. Timed lap against everyone else.

2) Nissan GT-R track session on the Silverstone Southern circuit
This is the one everyone was here for. The session was 15 minutes in road mode, and then 15 minutes in track mode. We were given a score by the instructor, and then a couple of hot laps from them to see what the car could really do.

3) Drifting in a 350Z
A drift course set out so we could try our hands at drifting in a controlled environment. We were scored by the instruction, and then taken out by them. Our score came from the Racelogic Driftbox installed in every car.

4) 350Z around Stowe circuit
About 10 minutes practice, and then a timed lap against everyone in the 350Z around Silverstone's practice circuit.

The day was action packed, and we had a minibus taking us from point to point. There was a full hospitality suite at each section with drinks, food, and sofas etc. It must have cost them a fortune.

We jumped straight into the minibus and then found out our first event was the sprint circuit in the GT-R. We got out and then were greeted by the instructor who told us where the car should go, and the benchmark time for the sprint.

It was quite hard to go from just looking at the car in a magazine or the motorshow, to getting straight in and having to floor it immediately. There was no adjustment period, but work must be done LOL. I don't know any other manufacturer that lets you do that!

On my go, I hit the benchmark time of 21 seconds on my first practice run, and then beat it on my second. I then had 2 timed runs, the first of which I set my best lap, and the 2nd I understeered badly and messed up the time.

I went on to set the 3rd fastest time in my group.

Video of my practice and timed laps on the sprint:

The next section was the one we had all been looking forward to - Silverstone South circuit in the GTRs where we could really push them and find out what they were about. We arrived, had a 1 minute chat, and then got straight into the cars with our designated instructors, who then took us for a slow lap of the circuit to show us where we were going etc.

Once back in, I jumped into the drivers seat and then out we went onto the circuit. I had a couple of slow laps to begin with as I had never visited the circuit before, and then once I felt comfortable with where I was going I started to push the car a little more.

Along the straight it feels like your doing about 100-110mph, but you're actually doing over 150mph by the time you need to brake. The speed of the thing is incredible. The traction control is an absolute killer out of the corners though - you can feel it robbing you loads.

Then we came in and switched the car to race mode - dampers set to stiff, shifts set to their fastest, and traction control heavily relaxed. When we went back out the car immediately felt better through the first corner. Much less body roll and much more controlled. Also when you hit the power out of the corner the traction control is much less intrusive.

The paddle shifts are very responsive and I never had to ask it to do something more than once. The car disguises its weight very well, but I still think it's far from ideal on the track. Don't get me wrong, it's completely brilliant, but it's just working too hard at pretending not to be fat when really it is. The result is that you'll end up spending loads on tyres and brakes. I'll still be tracking mine though - just not that often smile This is only my initial opinion from a very limited amount of time in the car. I'll probably change my mind a bit once I have had time to drive the car how I want and have adapted.

It's hard to guess how fast the GTR is when Silverstone is so wide and open. All I can tell you is than on the road it will be absolutely devastating. The speed it climbs to 150mph is just plain ridiculous. It's effortless, and when driven properly it really does do the business. You'll see on the video how effortlessly it pulls past other GT-Rs.

A couple of drive-bys I filmed whilst I stopped for a drink:

Our next session was drifting in the 350Z. I have never really done much drifting before as I have never owned a RWD car, so I was expecting to be pretty bad at it. Everyone was reluctant to get in, so I opted to go first (no pressure then)!

The car was a LHD model, but that didn't matter since we were only using 2nd gear anyway. Once I drove round the course slowly, it was time to "D1 it up" so off I went and I can tell you it's a lot harder than it looks.

I had 4 goes at the course, and managed to spin only once. The best bit of all was the hot demonstration lap. Unfortunately they were not recorded to memory card, but I managed to capture what went on from outside the car during someone else's lap. The video will not do it justice - you had to be in the car to really appreciate it. I was laughing the whole time and for about 5 minutes afterwards!!!

Last session of the day was the Stowe circuit session in the 350Z. This is an inner circuit within the Silverstone track, but still plenty of fun. I had about 10 minutes in the car, and then we had 1 timed lap without an instructor. I had literally the most sarcastic instructor in the world - he was hilarious both in and out of the car. He was making jokes about my driving all the way through and was really fun to be with. You'll hear it on the video.

The 350z was such a great car to drive - easily as much fun as the GT-R. Once I got confident after a couple of laps I was just trying to get the car sideways out of the corners all the time. It's a great little car the 350Z! I really enjoyed the 350Z as much as the GT-R.

On my timed lap, I recorded the 2nd fastest lap of the day which I was really happy about.

My practice laps of the Stowe circuit in the 350Z *sound required* (worth watching the whole way through - I was doing my best to drift and the instructor was making me laugh loads):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=67AGF5IqQtY

We then all headed back to the BRDC hospitality suite, had some refreshments and then a prize giving for the day.

When the scores were announced, our team were awarded the best team of the day, I had 2nd fastest lap of the day, and I was also 2nd best driver of the day based on the scores.

I was absolutely amazed at what a great day Nissan had put on for us. It was action packed from start to finish and never a moment where you were just standing around.

I'll definitely be signing up to the Race Academy to do some more of these fantastic events, and most of all, I'm very much looking forward to taking delivery of my own GT-R where I can spend as much time as I like using it. It's definitely the car for me, and should be absurdly fast on the road.

I'm even more confused about what colour I want now though!

Cheers guys - there have been so many question marks over the cars performance lately. Will it do a 7:29? Is it really that fast round the Top Gear track? etc...

I don't know, but what I do know is that it's a fantastic car to drive. People are looking too much into figures and times, but how the car drives and the experience it gives is worth a lot more than any lap time claim.

How's your neck? Looking at the footage there were lateral g's of > 1.1 and sustained cornering ~0.9g which, imo, is pretty impressive on road tyres!

Great write-up - enjoy your toy when it arrives.

Rumour has it that Nissan are using the lap times to decide on who's worthy of allocation for V-Spec cars....

excellent write up lawrence.

I did the day on the 7th august and still have a buzz thinking about it. Took my helmet along to a track day last week in my GT3 and had a few questions on what the GTR is like...I want people to know that as a porsche nut, I think the GTR is bloody fantastic and all this guff about "playstation" handling is utter crap.

Interesting comments on the other thread, because while it is difficult to say without sounding arrogant, I feel that I am in a much better position to comment on the car having driven it and many comparable cars than some people who seem to be constantly knocking it, and clearly haven't. Many of them probably haven't even done a track day let alone drive a GTR.

It was the track driving that really sold the car to me though. I found it very frustrating with all the traction etc on.
But once it was turned off on the track, I fell in love. It felt utterly awesome with levels of feedback and grip as good as my GT3, yet it was faster, more stable, though less raw. Track driving is what Im better at, as I came bottom in the superpole (aids were all on and i found the car just bogged down), but my track score was 95% and drifting was near 90 so somehow I won the driver of the day. Probably sound even more arrogant now, but if it is to qualify the opinion that the GTR is an amazing car then so be it.

If thats the case then Nissan will be given me a 1100cc GTR judging by my times.

Cheers Peter. I have to agree with the handling. It's still very organic, but very difficult to unsettle. I didn't find the electronic trickery intrusive (except for the traction control). All I found is that it made the car even more stable and predictable as I started to add more and more to my corner entry speed.

You're absolutely right about being in a better position to comment about the car (as per my reply on the other thread). I'm really trying hard to filter out the comments from those with no experience of the car, but it's difficult to let someone go on talking about something they are clueless about.

I managed 85% on the circuit, 79% at drift, but I did very well at the Superpole. I'll be doing more Race Academy events as I loved them.

You are right about colour...Im more confused now.

White looks great, but I just dont think I can live with it long term.
Silver just doesnt look that "ultimate". Like DMG but its just too stealthy.
Ive ordered red, but it looks a bit in your face..

Great write-up! Good to see some info from someone who has actually driven one rather than armchair experts. Very impressed with the instructors and good to see Nissan giving future owners decent instruction on how to actually drive a car such as this.

Would have a GTR in a second given the money but will have to wait 20 years when you can pick them us second hand on the cheap!

Was a great day i agree, we actually did the national circuit though, also found the traction control a real pain on the stowe circuit.

BTW - are you sure you were reading the speedo correctly when you thought you were doing 150 on the main back straight.

Check out the drivers republic test of the gtr round the silverstone gp circuit. It only managed 139 mph down the straight and that was from exiting the becketts complex which should be quicker.

Maybe you were looking at kph wink

I wasnt really bowled over by the gtrs straight line acceleration, it certainly didnt feel any quicker than the sagaris i had, and much slower than a 996 GT2 id test driven, but the speed it carried through the corners was immense, in the drivers republics test against the R8 and new 911S it wasnt any quicker than either in a straight line i think all were within 1 mph of each other down the straights, but it carried better speeds through nearly all the corners

This was the first thing I thought when I watched the DR video earlier in the week. In the briefing at the start of the day, we were told that the cars would be doing 150mph along the straight, and that the fastest trap speed so far was 152mph.

I can't understand why the DR video only clocked 139mph!

I didn't look at the speedo once, but you'll see in the video that the car is at the top of 5th gear at the end of the straight on almost every lap.

I was about 500rpm over my usual shift point, but the instructor told me to leave it in 5th and rev slightly more instead of changing to 6th. 7000rpm in 5th is 150mph on the dot, so I'm pretty sure 150mph is accurate. The instructor even says we were doing 150 at one point in the video.

Maybe DR got given one of the slow ones?

That sounds like an awesome day! Not normally round these parts but I was considering putting a deposit down on one at the British motor show, is this the test-drive that they talk about?

I asked them about what would happen to the deposit should I, having test-driven it, decide I don't want one and they said that as long as it was within 28days of receipt of the deposit I could get a full refund. But having read this, what'll happen to the helmet etc? Surely they'd lose money on me? Though i guess many wouldn't pull out of one having the experience you've mentioned...

The race academy was for available for pre order customers, available to book at either silverstone or nurburgring, i think only 400 spaces were available and with 700 initial orders it was on a first come first served basis so it got booked up really quickly. The crash helmet was only for people attending the day and not for anyone ordering a car.
They may organise another next year for people placing orders now for 2010 delivery.
