Cracking trip down to Cornwall with temp steady at 90 deg then shot up to 100 deg plus. The rubber around the radiator cap on the expansion tank (large black cylinder abeam alternator) had perished and coolant was leaking out under pressure. Fashioned a temp repair but car is now 200 miles away. What cap do these take as a replacement as I can't take mine into the shop as it is not exactly close! Crack this and voltage drop to radiator fan (down from 12v to 4.2v at the motor - motor works as I connected it direct but did not want to keep constantly running. Poss a drop through relay?) and I am back on the road to enjoy the sun!
Steve Heaths book says radiator pressure cap should be on swirl pot - not expansion tank.
This is the opposite to the S manual.
I've looked at this on my V8S as I was losing water slowly - when the system get warm it pushes water out of the swirl pot into the expansion tank past the pressure seal - then when it cools it draws it back in via a small one way valve in the cap.
Sounds like you make have pressure cap on expansion tank.
The radiator pressure cap needs a rubber seal under the outer edge of the pressure cap (the one I bought didn't come with one so I took it off the old cap) otherwise when it expands it pushes the water out, but when it cools without the seal it draws in air so gradually emptying the cooling system over time
If this isn't clear let me know, I'll take a picture of my cap if you need me to.
My expansion tank cap is just a flat aluminium cap with a rubber seal - there is no pressure seal as the vent is just open to air as an overflow.

It's Quinten Hazel part number QH FC53. It is a common part and used on early Minis and is the long reach version. You'll need to create a rubber sealing washer to seal the cap to the very top surface of the swirlpot neck. I did this using a mountian bike inner tube that I cut into a circular washer with a suitable sized hole in the middle.
Regards the fan. chech the connector from loom to fan. Mine was corroded badly and the fan didn't work.

My shiny new Quinten Hazel QHFC53 arrived yesterday so I now need to make the rubber seal. Yes, I could use the old one, but would rather replace just in case the old part is 'knackered'.
Not being of the cycling persuasion, if I simply ask for an inner tube for a mountain bike from my local bike shop, will I be asked all sorts of questions for which I won't know the answer? If I tell them its for use on my evil polluting car-with-attitude I'll probably be escorted out...

Just replaced the pressure sealing cap on my expansion tank with this one off FEEbay, its a tight fit due to a thicker sealing ring but works ok.
