Load of questions I cant find answers for using the search option:

Which is the better engine, the 1.8T or the 2.0? or should I say which is the better choice.

Which Gti comes with the Recaro seats?(or is it a option upgrade)

Which one comes with the wood effect dash? (So I can avoid it vomit)

What am I looking for with a car with 100,000+?

cheers guys

2.0 is a rubbish engine(115bhp) and imo should have never been called a gti, it was purely a trim level.

The 1.8T is a good engine and can be tuned if required, things to look for are usual turbo car stuff (smoke etc) gold wise rear axles bushes are prone to splitting ruining the handling, check cambelt history should of been done 80k/4 years

As already said, 1.8T by a mile, it has far more power to start with and is easily tuneable, whereas the 2.0 is well underpowered for the weight of the MkIV and there's not much available for it tuning wise.

All 1.8T GTIs should have the Recaro seats, they were standard on the 1.8T, V5 and (I think) V6 4-motion.

I think that was only in the SE, so if you're after a GTI you've nothing to worry about.

Other than the usual coil-packs, MAF sensor etc, I don't really know, but I'm sure someone will be along soon who does.

Hope that helps.

As mentioned 1.8T easily....but it's still down to preference, so drive them both. You should be able to pick up a 2.0 much cheaper.

>Which Gti comes with the Recaro seats?(or is it a option upgrade)

The 1.8T...but not all of them. Some had the VW sports seats which are not quite as good, but still very supportive. Leather recaros are the mutts nutts and worth paying a premium for.

>Which one comes with the wood effect dash? (So I can avoid it )

Again, the 1.8T has some wood effect on the dash, but not much and it isn't bad. From memory there is a strip on the dash and the gearnob is wood effect. The 2.0 has no wood effect.

As previously mentioned, usual high mileage stuff. Should have a full service history, no whines and whirrs and no smoke at all. I sold mine with 140000 on the clock and it was mint, but had every dealer stamp on the proper date. They will go very high but need looking after.

The Mk4 1.8T Gti has a fair bit of wood on the dash - the stereo / centre console surround, gear knob and surround and a bit of the door handles.

But it cant be swapped for the aluminium trim from the R32 or painted yourself with some satin paint.

That's a good point. I'd forgotten that the earlier cars came with the Recaros, which were then replaced for the later cars with the VW sports seats. They're actually a VERY similar design though, so shouldn't be an issue unless you're just after the embroidered logo.

There is a fair bit of it, but I've not seen any 1.8T that didn't have it in Piano Black, so it doesn't look out of place like fake walnut would (like in the V6 4motion), it just looks like quite a classy black dash.

The 1.8t is king. I have one I love it. Good torque - if you can buy one that has the improved 180bhp instead of the standard 150 - makes all the difference. I'll be putting mine up for sale soon - i want an upgrade - and it hasn't got a wood finish! Let me know if you're interested?
