Metric Signs Before the Olympics?
Discussion
Well if the experience in Ireland is anything to go by you'll all be whinging like buggery cos the speed limits will go down.
NSL type speed limit in Eire that used to be 60mph is now 80kph, 50mph!!!!!!
Of course the Irish in doing the sensible thing shock ignore it and still do 60mph.

Whilst we're at it, why don't we turn all the signs around the other way and start driving on the right?
There is a plan to do this starting on 01/04/2007, it will be a pilot scheme and only buses and lorries will be involved to start with, if it is a success then cars will forced to switch to the right side also.

More seriously. If we harmonised our road system with Europe (nigh on impossible, mind) we'd be able to buy cheap LHD vehicles.
Ahh yes as they do in Denmark ,, dont worry Don they would think up a new tax to put a stop to that malarky

Ex-Labour leader Lord Kinnock, who is backing the report, says the UK's imperial signs contradict its modern image.
In an introduction to the report, he says: "Our imperial road signs are perhaps the most obvious example of the muddle of measurement units in the United Kingdom.
"They contradict the image - and the reality - of our country as a modern, multicultural, dynamic place where the past is valued and respected and the future is approached with creativity and confidence.
The muddle of measurement units exist because we have been forced into the wholesale adoption of a system of weights and measures that the majority of the population doesn't want or need.

I can't believe there is a UK Metric Association. What use dow they do?? And what sort of person would use any part of their life being a part of such a petty minded and usless organisation!!

well born well after change over.. all i was ever taught was Metric - yet i've gone back to Imperial
far easier when out surveying a site to callout/write down 4'6" than 1371mm
a brick is 8 1/2in x 2 1/2in x 4in or 215mm x 65mm x 102.5mm
English steel sizes are the metric equivalent of their whole imperial measures...
the length of the end of my thumb to knuckle is 1in i can step a yard, my foot is a ft long.
better a whole pint than half a litre
if the metric association was serious about the adoption for metric - then why dont they campain for the introduction of metric (internet) time

from reading the opinions here ill get crucified for this, but id be more than happy to go all metric. im 20 and everything taught through school and university now is in metric, the only grasp of imperial measures i have is from driving and my height.
for the record, if it could ever be practical id be happy switching over the the right side of the road too

A favourite bugbear of mine. The only reason we are still allowed to drink 'pints' is because since the introduction of 20oz glasses in pubs to replace the old ----pint to line--- 24oz glasses which could hold a pint plus the head, we are in effect drinking 500ml measures.
Did you ever wonder why we got "13 1/2% extra free" in our cans of beer around decimalisation time?
440ml = 15 Fluid Ounces = 3/4 pint
+13.5%= 500ml
The half litre pint arrived through the back door.
The only place you can still get a real pint that I know of is Cropton

Any more?

which is why i only frequent pubs with the dimbled pint pots - so theres pint + head
I've got my Grandfathers pint mug - an ornate ceramic mug, with a lid that used to hang up in his local, with a pint in it ready for when he went in after work.

Ooop Norf, even the glass pots wiv dimples on have shrunk to 20oz unless you can find an old one which escaped the Brewery-led Kristelnacht style purge of proper pint pots.
Where are the boys from weights and measures when you need 'em?
