Count me in!

[quote=teen_cerbera]I think its an excellent idea, everyone give a small amount £2 or so, then get the car built, get the sponsorship in etc. Then to decide who drives it we can raffle the car off every now and again as suggested. The chance to drive the car at certain events may also be available through ebay e.g. Drive the PH Race car at X race course on the X date, this would mean that if you really wanted to drive it, you could. This would also raise revenue for the team, the car would also be worth alot on ebay when we come to sell it due to PH members becoming attached and wanting to own it.
Great Idea about the team, we could have votes on Race cars, paint scheme etc. Once it is agreed that the majority vote wins, no matter what, then there shouldnt be any trouble.
Like the idea about ebaying drives....It could happen so easily and it would only cost a quid!...

You know, F.M, the will is there, it just needs tapped. What the problem here, i reckon, is that the PHers who are not actually race drivers are repressed race drivers. Speaking from my point of view, i would love, love, love to be part of a racing team - i'm an ok driver, an ok-ish engineer, and a most likely hopeless mechanic. My only chance of being in a race team is through an idea akin to yours - that's why i'd be in 100%.
The problem for me would be the disappointment of not having much chance to drive, or even work on, the car. It would be nice (only just nice) to think you were contributing to a project that brings people otherwise disparate together, but for me it would need to be a hands on experience. I contribute to Amnesty, Cancer researc etc, and more than 1 quid, so i know i can afford it, but cars (sadly) are closer to my heart, and not a charity, so i wanna drive the thing!!
I know it seems as though people may not be able to gell on this, but in the end, if you read the posts, everyone wants this too happen, but don't see how it could work for them, and this is one of the reasons my earlier post suggested some sort of regional PH teams, perhaps of 100-200 people per region, and 50 to 100 quid a year each. The people asking here which race series to enter the car in perhaps missed my point about having a PH series.
Yes, this is tough to do, yes it will cause frictions, but it will create more friendships, more fun than sorrow, and more smiles than frowns. Also i think people may be missing your initial point that the car should not be some 150G lambo, but a binner, that has become loved again through the care of a few. Also, if this 5G car has 200 'owners' then maybe six to eight can have it each weekend, with a few off in the year for repair, tweaking etc.
I think the main problem as yet is awareness. If this idea is a go-er, then maybe get Petrol Ted in on the act, perhaps he can make sure the EVERY member is sent a note, as it's a PH thing, or will let you post an ad?
I want this to happen, and know others who would be interested too.
Lets, as you say, do it!!

Hi,
you have some good points,..Breaking down the PH members into regions is the way to go..It will increase the chances of shareholders seeing and driving the actual car and eliminates the need to travel miles to get to it although again numbers may take time to build up. We could do 3 teams : London area , Midlands , Scotland. Your suggestion about getting the project recognised is valid and I will get my thinking cap on concerning this. As for selecting drivers I think a GT4 lap time challenge would be quicker to get the drivers for the week/month as Karting sessions could turn into a mass of twisted over-enthusiastic nutjobs!! .. with maybe 3 drivers per event.. Since we would be a `new` outfit I would think trackdays would be better suited to our needs for the first `season`...The crucial element during these events would to be to have a ball and get some nice vids for the members.
Have you been to any scrappies recently...We have become a decidant society..Beutiful 2.5 V6 Omegas...Jaguars...etc I remember the days where you would cut the floorpan/arches out to fix`em up...Nobody would dream of doing such these days.. Cars get tossed when the alternator gives up and the M.O.T is due...We should get moving soon as they don`t hang about for long before they get cubed. By the time we agree we should buy a classic there will only be puntos and other `appliance` cars left..
In order to actually get the ball moving we could send Petrol Ted a quid and let him post on a special "PH RACE CAR" section the members names and Team. i.e...
Team NORTH :Me
Any person who is up for it...
Team MIDLANDS:Any person who is up for it...
Team LONDON :Any person who is up for it...
How do we contact Ted?..
Where there is a will, PH members will find a way!

I still suggest that if you want to drive, you buy a car or team up with a small number of people in your immediate area who are prepared to be involved on an equal footing. Two is OK, three is marginal, beyond that I don't think it is workable. The cost (in time and money) will be significant but you get a lot back in return.
If you just want the thrill of being involved with a race team then support somebody who is already doing it. The cost can be as small as you want, but you remain a spectator.
To be honest I don't think there is a middle ground, I don't think it would be sensible for anyone to pay £1 in the hope of spending thirty seconds behind the wheel, in the hope that none of the other 999 people to drive it that year have broken it by then.

Hey, You may have something there .....We could sponser a small team already racing..
I like the angle, we could see this come to fruition alot quicker ...I`ll do some sniffin about ..."Team Pistonheads" could finance tuning for some guy to win for us...We would again fit Bullit cams etc for the website and would do the site the world of good.
What class of racing would be the question?..

The SD1 has been mentioned a few times
... Well i'm up for it.
and having a raffle to drive it sounds a good idea. Is the car JUST going to be a track car or is it going to be road legal? With a higher raffle (£10?) for the use over a weekend.
Adverts could be placed all over it. I am sure that some of the mad garage/modders would like to put their names to it.

I know of small team, regular contributor to PH, had some good results but always short on funds
We've regularly had PH members helping out with the team, and im more than happy for more.
we also have a spare car that we've hired out in the past.... which with some fettling, ( new motor) could be run at a couple some events for people if there was enough interest.

Hi!...I`ve been reading your website..I`m VERY impressed lads. I could not have imagined a better outfit to support. Your driver has talent, you bust your balls prepping the car...You definetly need a `built V8` for your race car to eliminate costly delays and points for the races....COUNT MY VOTE...!!
What we need now is the support and a PH paintjob.
Any more info on the teams plans concerning the 06 season?..
We`ll there we go...no arguments ...It is PERFECT!!...
C`mon people lets do it!

Yup, especially the one who tested at Mallory last September.
I think you'll find there are loads of PH'ers out there who stick up pretty much everything they have to get a car on track. Graham (and Ian) has munched his fair share of bananas to burn the midnight oil prepping the Taz and more recently the Tuscan. The folks who spannered for him last year did so because they had nothing better to do with their weekends than sleep in a tent and wield a spanner.
As for prepping a car yourself...it ain't going to be cheap no matter how many people stump up £1. The best way to go about things would be to see howmuch money you have and half that figure. Now with that figure that is half the original amount, knock an extra 25% off and base your budget around whats left. For a 'cheap' entry car something like an XR2i for the Stock hatch series is a fairly good way to go, but remember even then you're looking at £100 for your race entry each race, then about the same in fuel & comsumables, plus getting the car there, plus food etc and all of a sudden thats £500 for a race weekend. Another way is to get in your day to day car, drive along a motorway in the pouring rain at 100mph, throwing £20 notes out of the window.
If you get 1000 people all with an equal financial claim to the car, who says who did the most work etc etc. And remember that it will take 2 1/2 years of driving the car every day of the year for every one to have a go. It isn going to happen.
Make the running yourelf and if "sponsors" or friends can be persuaded to chip ni with either cash or time or both, then great, but don't try and run before you can walk.
Regards
Iain
(Graham's mechanic (other than Ian) last year, and the tallented driver at Mallory...oh and his Nemesis this coming season
) I think PH as a group could buy a race team and let the team do what they have to do, but with all the PHers funding we could be the main sponsor, would be nice to beable to give something back to PH in the form of raised awareness just few everyone on here chipping in £20, i dont know how many users there are but im guessing enough that £20 each would buy a privateer tourcar team? plus im guessing that of all the users on here we would have consultants/race mechanics/engineers/designers etc so out sourcing wouldnt be required, just need to hire a talented driver who needs a drive!
if we talked to Petrol Ted and he was up for it, maybe we could get a list going of people who would put in, then setup a PH PayPal account. if the right money was never raise, we could take the funds and buy something 'car based' (dependant on amount) and raffle it off to those who did chip in?
