Selling a car privately - wasters and bullies

Having read this thread, do you think there is a small scale service to offer private sellers along the lines of a Sale or Return basis?
Basically a cross between Trade and Private by offering to sell someones vehicle privately as long as the seller pays all advertising (agreed before) and an agreed fee, maybe a £100 minimum up to a percentage of the selling price. In theory the Seller would have incurred the advertising costs anyway, and they are only down the sales fee, however they save all the hassle of dealing with the punters?
What do you think? I don't mean a full scale sales lot, just a couple of car per week sold by a professional who can cut out all the crap for you, get you the best price (as on a % it's in their favour). It could all be protected by a sales agreement and bank guatantee letters to cover any fund queries?
Just a thought as I could happily do this in my spare time for anyone interested in the south east. No sale, no fee, just pay the advertising. Plus I could advise you how to prepare/present the car to get the best price.
Interested in feedback.

You didn't know, did you, that there's a chap on eBay who sells a book describing in great detail how to set up in business doing EXACTLY this?
It's called, 'The FASTPLAN method. Be a Car Sales Agent' He's been selling shedloads since 2005 so it's hardly an original idea!
Sorry if I rained on your parade; might still be scope for more punters, though.
Best, B
No, it's a fair comment, but then I wouldn't want someone to represent me and my car and sell it after they've only read a book!!!
My USP is I've done it for 15years so know the best way to present a car and get the buyer the best return.
As an example, for friends recently, I nearly doubled their trade value of their old car and found them a replacement £2k cheaper. Net result for them £4k up on if they had let the dealer part exchange their car against a new one.
Not bad eh???? Got to be some demand for a small scale service out there surely???

An interesting proposition, although I think you'd have a hard time selling the service to people as it sounds a lot like Cardata and all those other monkeys who phone you up from your Autotrader ads....
No matter how many times you say no sale=no money I think people will still think it's some form of scam...
Yeah I know it's a good idea. Sounds obvious as I always handle the private sales of friends and family so it's a logical jump to do it for others.
I think the best way to do it is just small scale only 1 or 2 at a time as a sideline and all covered by legal agreement so the car owner is protected.
Should be fool proof. Anyone want to give it a go??? Best to grow piecemeal through word of mouth as no rush.
Interested in feedback so please fire away....
Interestingly there is already a chap on here who does what you've described, the company is called the carfinder (www.1stservice.co.uk ) and the chaps name is TCF.

I would agree with your stereotype Mr Terrorist.. while the Asian community loves a bargain and will haggle you into the ground (to the point of offending) at least they are prepared to buy at the end of it. Whereas there is an element of Western "buyers" who will tyre kick, ask for a test drive, ask a million and one basic questions they should know even before setting off, then go and test drive 10 other cars, and then decide they don't want that type of car after all.
We had one person to look at our Boxster, who came specifically to look at our car because it had Boxster Red interior (more terracotta than red) only to find they didn't like it.. then we had another person look at the car, had a drive, but transpired that they were also considering a Megane, a 206CC and an array of other cars.. Car was sold at full asking price to a guy who bought it unseen.

How else do you suggest you make up your mind 100% what you want without getting out there and looking at a few examples? There's only so much you can research from Mags and forums.

Exactly - they're a headache and yes, 8 out of 10 want extra discount. Just because we're Indian they think they should be entitled to something off.
As someone earlier in the thread - its a cultural thing. Its what many asians do. Live with it.
So when someone from one culture sells a car to someone from another culture. Who's culture should we follow sellers or the buyers?
Who cares? Some guy tries it on for a discount, just say no. End of.
Its nothing to do with been racist BUT..........I have had Asians ask to look at logbooks of cars, if there is an asian name in the logbook they wont buy it..........tell me why............secondly my premises are in an asian area, we have been there 14 years, we have sold car to fewer than 20 over those years.we do not stock cars that do not appeal to them, as to be frank they are too much aggro to deal with and generally take the piss...........I realise the above is a harsh attitude to take but it has saved me time and trouble, it might have cost me the odd deal, but I doubt it, as time spent wasted with them could have been spent with a real buyer.
Just sold my car through Pistonheads after only two days. Buyer paid cash and has emailed me since to say he's very happy.
I have found the best way to sell privately is to be realsitic with your price and completely honest in your description. That way, the buyer knows exactly what to expect and avoids problems later.
Never sold a car to an Asian though, so can't comment!

Ironic..on one hand there are threads on this board questioning how come so many Asians have nice cars and on the other there are narrow minded comments like this....the cars must be being bought from somewhere..How do you explain the cars that I own or have owned? How do you explain asian owned car dealer businesses that are extremely successful (like the one that specialises in Porsches and advertises on this very site?)
Given your sentiment I guess I should stop buying cars from dealers. I should consider all car traders to be lying cheats who wear sheapskin coats and cannot stop talking anything other than giberish to make £50 on the sale of a car from a local bomsite-yes this stereotype would be very stupid.
I was selling a set of nice OEM BMW alloys a couple of years ago and had an Asian chap who was very keen, I sent him details and photos and he said he'd have them, didn't haggle at all. He had a drive of approx 90 miles and I waited in as promised. They were £150 for the set, a very good price for a set of 16" genuine BMW wheels with new Pirellis fitted, they had no kerbing or abrasion or lacquer rash and I had thoroughly cleaned them and slicked the tyres - they looked great!
He arrived, looked at them for about 45 minutes, said OK, I loaded them in his car boot for him, the time came to pay me, he knew the price and ......offered me £80!
I knew how far he had driven; why had he done that if I had overpriced them?
I held out for full price and he eventually paid it.
To be honest, I don't think ethnic minority makes a great deal of difference. My father died and my Mother doesn't drive so had to sell his car which I sorted out for her. Had a Father and Son have a look and you could tell they were really keen, they knew the reason for sale and they could see my Mother was also upset. What did they do, they offered a lower price which was fair enough and we accepted their offer and then the Father notices a rear brake light not working on one side and knocked another £350 off their offer and this is for a car that was only £1500 to start with
I said I'd knock £1 off for a new bulb and then kept quiet, they uuummmed and aaarrrred for a few minutes and then said OK
My poor Mum was so upset and offended by them, she couldn't face them and went back into the house.
Trying it on for £350 for a light bulb and under the circumstances, very calous.

Its called negotiation-you should try it...however the buyers for the car should have been far more sensititve to your mother's needs-however this is no different to recent experience of an asian friend of mine. His father bought a brand new Mercedes S350 (yes he's asian and actually bought a car-hard to believe I know but it happens!). Unfortuantely he developed cancer and died 12 months later. The car had done 500 miles in that year. My fiend took the car back to the Mercedes Dealer where a anglo-saxon caucasion salesman (who obviously wears a sheepskin coat and would hoare his wife for a sale-as we know all salesmen do) offered him 30% of the cars orininal price that he had sold it to my fiends father for (list £70k- offered £25k). On this basis I will never deal with a anglo saxon salesman-too much hassle

£350 does seem rather silly for a dead light, though. Bloke knew the price, haggled a bit (which the chap said he wasn't too bothered about) but then tried it on far too much.

That's your prerogative and no one is saying otherwise.
You on the other hand are saying its wrong for a a car dealer to not want to deal with Asians on the basis that they're too much hassle.

Yes I was being sarcastic-just shows how stupid this attitude is when the boot is on the other foot...
Paracetamol you really are cracking me up.. How close can you actually get to calling the Race Card without actually saying it.. Come on out with it; “Anyone who can’t be bothered with Asian culture of insanely low offers is clearly Racist and should be pilloried as such!”
There..
Must admit that living near High Wycombe I am used to it, car sales, 2nd hand furniture, car boot sales they are always the same..
Sure I have been
ed about by Anglo Saxons but I reckon the ratio is 5 to 1 in favour of our Asian chums. The big difference is white pikeys, they tend to use distraction and pinch stuff when car booting where as I never caught an Asian try that on, They would much rather spend 45 minutes trying to argue about 50p. If they are nice and friendly then no problemo but some of them can be downright rude and that is when I start sticking the price up.
When I sell a Car if they turn up mob handed, and they do, I allow the prospective purchaser and one companion on the test drive. When negotiating we go into my house with one companion. The rest can mill about on the driveway in the pissing rain for all I care. Make an insanely low offer and I will invite them not to waste my time or the deal is off. I am within my rights to sell to who I like and even take the car off the market should I choose.
I get some phone calls and they can’t even speak the feckin lingo, how am I supposed to deal with that.. Am I racist because I cannot understand a word that they say?
Am I racist because I won’t give my car away to them?
Am I racist because I really have better things to do than waste my time with their shenanigans?
One Asian lad looking at my very tidy 89 Golf GTI 8v, I wanted £1k, he offers £350, I say hes wasting my time, he says no that is the best offer so I walk away and leave him to it. 10 mins later he bangs on the door £500! I respond sorry price has gone up to £1500, he argues I close the door.. Bangs on door again, £650! I respond I’d rather set fire to it and close the door.
I can confirm that I am not racist and will sell the car to anyone but waste my time and I walk away..
p.s. If Asian culture is to haggle, how come they shoo me out of their shops when I offer 50p for a mars bar, pack of crisps and bottle of pop?
And I did do that after the Asian Lad incident above, his old man ran the shop! I had seen Lad behind the counter loads of times… I guess he didn’t recognize me cos all us whiteys look the same

I agree with you on all of this- Being racist is to tar every asian with the same brush and refuse to deal with them..on that instance I will without doubt place the race card as you are treating me unfairly for the colour of my skin an assuming that I am the same as the other 0.01% of the Asian population that you have met and have had an unfortunate experience with.
just my take on the whole 'haggling' /'bargaining' shennanigans ... there's nothing wrong with it, after all, no one wants to pay more than neccessary - it's how you go about it that matters.
so here's Fido's guide to haggling [for all colours & creeds] ...
i. if someone says 'Not Negotiable' then stop ars*ing about with the guy. it's just irritating. no harm in trying i suppose, but don't hang around when seller starts getting abusive/unfriendly.
ii. offering £350 for £1000 car is kinda taking the pee really. i expect it's to do with the 'let's go halfway mentality' in the hope that you may drop the price to £600. again, don't expect to be invited in for a Cuppa.
iii. once you've shaken or Agreed a price, don't go back on your word.
iv. do not get Abusive when someone refuses to negotiate - it's not going to do you any favours is it? i had this recently with a mother/daughter who started trying to knock £30k off the price of my house one late evening. i was still in my jim-jams! daughter started getting quite nasty towards me, telling me my house was in a terrible state - one wonders why she was so keen to buy my 'crap' house from me? i'm not going to comment on said country of origin (of mother) in case i stoke some more flames on this thread...

Ended up selling to a man who bought it for his daughter. Met at a service station (dodgy I know but he sounded ok).
..don't worry, I bought a TVR from a pub carpark once.
I bought my Stag from a mate down the pub. I was really pissed and said I'd be up for it, we agreed for me to have a look the next morning.. I didn't remember until he called me, I went round more out of guilt than anything else and ended up buying the motor..
