...what is it with all these BMWs and their fake M badges?!

M Sport stuff is bad enough as it is even though it's factory fitted - IMO the only cars that should have them are "proper" M cars; but why have so many otherwise decent BMs got these hideous fake M badges stuck on the back and/or front?!

Is it something to do with the brand? Who is meant to be fooled by a 520d with an M badge on the boot? Or a 318d with one on the grille?

Who fits them? Are they specced from new?

Other brands have the occasional fake badge - the odd RS badge on Audis, the odd AMG one on a Merc, etc but nothing compared to the proliferation of M badges.

It makes me worry about the brand which had a pretty negative image as it is...

I do understand what your saying, there is a guy local to me with a 530D and has a M5 badge on the rear! I don't think it's too bad with an 'M' sport car with an 'M' badge as long as it isn't like 'M3' or 'M5' as above.

An M badge on the back is the sign of somebody who is excessively chuffed with the fact they have an M Sport. It's marginally sad but it isn't trying to pass it off as something it's not. They just want the world to know they have an M Sport, for reasons best known only to themselves..

I agree it lacks tacky though.

M5 badges though, thats a whole different world of retardedness.

I see M badges on all spec levels though - ES, SE, M Sport and on all series too - except the X models for some reason.

Not just M Sports - which TBH are a bit of a con anyway - £3k for some extra plastic and fragile, heavier wheels? Yep - that makes it much more sporty... wink However most BM owners (and aspiring owners) seem to go for it so BMW are clearly marketing it well - they make a much much bigger markup on M Sport kit than they do on their cars. Same with Audi and S-Line kit.

M cars are about performance - M Sport is about some overpriced add on that have zero performance enhancement - if anything they have the opposite effect.

I have about the only M Sport option that does'nt have M Sport tat written all over it - the suspension!

Anyway I digress...
