Next Saturday, going to see Wizard of Oz so need something to look forward to.

I think pre-theatre is likely to be rushed so maybe lunch, but lunch menus are a bit thin on the ground on a Saturday. I wanted to try Marcus Wareings new place but that's full as is Heston (and too expensive) Other alternatives were Wild Honey but we've been there and like to do new things.

Budget is £40-50ph for food and drink (wife is pregnant so that will keep the wine bill down). Any style of food, easy to get to, not too formal.

You're on the Western edge of Soho at the Palladium, so a few thoughts of places close by (used to work in Soho, did mucho entertaining, so know the area well)...

Quo Vadis
Dean Street Town House
L'Escargot
Barrafina
Yauatcha or Hakkasan
Terra Brindisa
Arbutus
Veeraswamy
Zilli Fish
Hix
GR at Claridges
L'Atelier de JR
J Sheekey

All within 10~15 mins walk

ETA dinner would of course be more than £50/head, but many do lunch set menus etc...

Thanks, I've booked J Sheekey, we both like fish and I remember this being a PH favourite.
Prices look reasonable and they do a set menu if we want it.

Excellent is the short version.

the longer version is that it's a pretty unexpected location for such a place, in the heart of tourist land, you'd not really know though unless you went it. Decoration is bistro style and staff were formal but not stuffy.

So, on to the food. Wife started with the chopped salad (prawns, avocado and bacon) and was very happy with it, juicy prawns, crispy bacon and salad and a nice coating of dressing. I opted for the gravlax which came with cucumber salad and a mustard sauce, all very well done and the sauce was just sharp enough. Promptly delivered a good start.

Mains were classic moules for wife and I opted to go for grilled Sand Sole of which I got three drenched in lemon butter. Another good balanced dish complimented by the excellent chips and parmesan courgettes. The mussels were fresh and plump and the cooking juices went well when mopped up with the excellent bread.

I can't really criticise the food or service, some of the other guests were loud and boorish (I've never heard anyone say "do you know who I am" in real life) but that's not the venues fault. They did add a cover charge which I've not seen for a long time and then add a service charge, at least they didn't have the cheek to then leave the pin machine for another tip.

So, overall I enjoyed it and would certainly go again.
