Ordered a Rockhopper from Samways in Derby, but they told me that despite taking my order, they did not have stock. Been looking around again, still like the Rockhopper, but I am warming to the Scott. Any thoughts, preferences, or alternatives in this sort of price bracket? I suppose that I want what most people want, best spec for the money.

I have never dealt with either company, so any help is much appreciated.

Just to complicate things, this also caught my eye.

Scott +1
dont own one but they look very good to me.

M8 has a Rockhopper like you first pic. Cracking bike but it looks like a penny farthing to me, with that curve at top of down tube !! Although the Rockshox forks are the best of all bikes listed IMO.

Trek 4900 thrown into mix too..

Have seen Scott Scale 70 2010 for just over £600, will try to get a look at a few bikes this weekend I think.

Looking at a Rockhopper today hopefully, and also a Trek 4900 disc and a Cube Acid too. Haven't tried any of them out yet, but am preferring the look of the Cube best with the Rockhopper in third at the moment.

You need to ride them all. I have had a Cube Ltd Team and now have a Rockhopper SL Pro (Blame thieving scum) and they ride completely differently. Rather depends waht you want it for. The Cube was very pretty and very racy but a bit dull in the handling. The Rockhopper is much more tough feeling and likes to be thrashed over tough stuff, bit harder to get the balance when you are climbing on techy stuff. The Spec is more fun overall if not really a looker.

Very true that, i currently have a Scott scale and it doesnt ride anywhere near as nicely as my rockhopper. The Scott does the job, dont get me wrong but the rockhopper did it better and was much more fun to ride.
The cubes are very nice to look at though. Try getting your hands on an older rockhopper maybe, they look nicer.
