Looking at something fun and economical which has led me to new shape (184bhp) Cooper S, maybe a few months old.

Quoted MPG is 48.7mpg. I know I won't average this but how close will I get. Do a lot of miles with a long commute and little city driving. As reference over 40,000 each I got the following:

R53 Cooper - From new 37mpg average
R53 05 Cooper S - 10k-50k average 31mpg

Would like to this I would get 40-45mpg out of the S which would tempt me in the mini direction.

For reference I don't want a Cooper D, or Cooper SD.

If you get 31 out of a Gen 1 cooper s, then I reckon you would easily see 40mpg. We've had both, Gen 1 I got around 26-28, Gen 2 (175bhp) we would see 38 quite regularly on the motorway etc ( town less so)

I have a one week old cooper s (185bhp) which is returning 37mpg (from cold) on a 6 mile mixes road commute. On a slightly longer journey last night (14 miles) I got 43mpg.

I'd therefore agree with the OP that 40 mpg should be easily achievable unless you hammer it.

Very impressed with the car- which has replaced a V8 M3!

The main issues are you buy a cooper s you drive them hard the economy is rubbish then. Said it many times, do not buy a mini for economy buy it for fun.

40mpg can be had with an r53 but you have to drive it like a saint. the R56 does do much better for consumption but you can still place it in the low 30s high 20s if you want to lead foot it however I have had high 50s out of an R56 just do 50mph with cruise control over many miles

It depends how the car is being driven - is your "daily drive" mostly 50/NSL trunk roads/motorways (expect ~40mpg even if you do the occasional max effort overtake) or mostly town driving with B-road blasts at the weekends (expect 26-28mpg).

I have had mine for about a month and have just finished running-in, During this period I have been averaging mid-40's but I expect that to drop once I start using the power in anger. Saying that I am reasonably confident that I should get mid to late 30's out of it, but no doubt if you do lots of track days you could seriously reduce that though!

We have a 57 plate Clubman S, so the previous engine and very slightly heavier. The wife has managed just short of 40mpg on the last two tank fulls driving reasonably economically, but with much heavy traffic work.

a bit more enthusiastic driving probably average 35 to a tank, when really pressing on it drops to sub 30.

You can acheive near the claimed combined figure, but it's a real chore to do so.

All in all though, pretty impressive for what it is, put in perspective it's quicker than my MX-5 2.0 Sport and easily acheives 7-8mpg more on average.

I never used to see 30s in the R53 S was always around mid 20s can easily get high 30s in the R56 S, and into the 40s on a long run.

46mpg when I try really hard, 42mpg over a tankful is easy. 35mpg is also easy to achieve when you try! 26,000 mile S clubman. No point in buying a diesel....

Good stories folks! The title was supposed to say 48.7mpg - book MPG.

However I bought one and so far impressed. 5 days and 500 miles in I am averaging 42mpg. My commute today got me 47mpg with a couple of blasts.

All on the clock of course. Not yet calibrated to a full tank but will do so tomorrow. Predicted range is about 470 so hope a true average of 40mpg has been gained.
