You know how it is, you go for a nice early morning drive into the Cheshire countryside, you see a stray Bentley Turbo R, pat it on the head, feed it a little unleaded that you have with you, as it looks hungry and then the bloody thing follows you home and starts whimpering at the workshop door, begging to be let in rolleyes

More details once I've washed off 3 years of dirt and had a word with Crewe to see what they can tell me about it smile

An old Turbo R? You brave, brave man...

I am insanely jealous, of course.

Looks like a '90 Vintage?

Late series I or early series II?

1990, so early series II with the fancy suspension smile . . . . . . . . it's green with black hide and green carpets bound in black, bodywork isn’t the best (tin worm in the usual places, repair sections ordered and TIG/MIG's warmed up ready), mechanically OK, but needs a full go through / major service, the best part was the price, but I'll leave that until I've got a full write up with pictures done smile

Great purchase for someone with your welding skills - likely ruinous for the rest of us! smile Look forward to the write-up and pics!

And I have a built in analogue mobile phone . . . . . . Which I haven’t quite managed to locate yet, it’s all very early 90’s hehe

Spent the afternoon looking at what needs to be done, so far it's "just" hydraulic service & bodywork!, tomorrows task is to get it clean, flat patch it in the workshop, wizz the tyres off the wheels, ready for Chris to get them bead blasted and ready for paint on Tuesday .

I've already put orders in with Introcar and Flying spares for a boat load of parts, which is why the dash picture has Tesco value custard in it . . . . . . Can’t afford to spend more than 6p on a joke.

Parts list is now at two pages of A4 biggrin

Will email you with a few more details and address for when you can make that pie and pint (would be good to finaly have a conversation in person, instead of just on here) smile . . . . Andy we'll sen pics to Tokyo as it may be a little far to come for a drink!

Would love to join you and BG for a pint and take a closer look at the car - seems to have some interesting features. But just a little difficult to pop round for the afternoon, so will make do with pics for now! smile

Out of interest, is there any common opinion on the benefit or not of the active suspension? I considered buying a Turbo R a couple of years ago and looked at some with, some without active ride.

One specialist told me that a late pre-active suspension car would be less troublesome than an early active ride car...but take a guess which model they had in stock!blabla

Cheers,

Andy

the accepted wisdom is that active ride makes a large difference to the car's road manners.

But the active ride components are very expensive to replace if damaged

you can decide if the chance of changing dampers is worth the extra cost

Terrorism must be rife in the UK, as a band of anarchic freedom fighters, based in Market Bosworth sent me two of these odd looking French hand grenades in the post . . . . As blowing people up isn’t really my thing, I think I'm going to stick’em in the rear suspension of the green drawing room on wheels to help the ride quality out a bit. . . . . worth a pictorial together with the rest of the hydraulic service?

Don't they just screw on? Not very interesting really. However any pictures of sheddy Flying Bs being given TLC are good, so go wild with the camera; I can vicariously enjoy the potential financial doom from the comfort of my sofa. Does it need any welding?

rofl just a little bit . . . . the Warickshire based anarchists also sent me what look like giant Ninja daggers, I'll be using them as repair sections for some of the more rot prone areas.

The paint depth tester would suggest that at some point, some talentless backstreet cowboy has taken the cheap and rather pathetic option of "repairing" the wheel arches with filler, it may be more expensive to do things properly by letting in new steel, but it's far far more in keeping with the whole RR/B ethos. . . .I just wish that the same ethos had stretched to rust prevention hehe

Not 'adequate' like the power output then? hehe

If you intend keeping it 'do it once, do it right' is the best way to approach maintenance and repair; certainly with wheel arches I find bodging is as time consuming as doing it properly to reach a given standard of cosmetic finish.

Not with the rot it isn't, not on these things anyway.

'Do it once, do it again, and again, and again...'

Thanks - I guess I should try and test drive back to back some time.

Finally had some time and space to get the initial evaluation done on BG.jr

Something tells me that it may need the full hydraulic service that I had planned

Pushing Tom's mini out of the way wasn’t a problem

The source of the leak

More to come tomorrow . . . . I have a camera permanently setup in the workshop, so prepare to be bored with rusty, oily, gory pictures of a slightly down at heal Turbo R
