Right - the story so far:

On my very lovely '89 Raleigh Mirage, which is 'as new' in many respects, the front (left) gearset thumb shifter thingy has stopped working, and so now I only have access to less than a third of my supposed total number of gears.

Not a big deal on a daily basis - riding to and from work, short rides at the weekend with my son on the back etc - but I would quite like the full range back.

Now, I doubt I'll be able to replace the original 'Shimano STI' selector, but as all it does, in basic terms, is pull a bit of cable, my assumption is that I should be able to replace it with a recent Shimano equivalent, which appear to cost around the £10-15 mark.

So - am I right? Will this work, and is it relatively easy to achieve?

it has to pull the right amount of cable to work. How many gears do you have? I'm sure someone can figure out cable pull from that, but without it's impossible as a 9-speed has different spacings to a 7-speed, 6-speed etc.

Or you can just use downtube (non-indexed) shifters, which will work with anything.

It's for the front gears of a 21-speed set, so three gears. My assumption is that the spacing between the three cogs will be much the same on any Shimano set, but I could need educating on this point.

Would be happy with a 'downtube' if that's the best/only way - miles better than not working at all!
