Now that the spring / Summer are here the Mrs and I are often cycling at the weekends. Mainly for fun, but there's a little fitness aspect in there too.
I'd like to buy her a new bike, to replace her ageing heavy Claude Butler - and have no idea what would suit her.

I've not got a great budget, lets say around £400. We tend to cycle along the roads cycle tracks mostly, with a little off road around country parks / fields etc. (Ridgeway for example).

I'd like to get her something light / comfortable. Should I just wonder to halfords at lunchtime or is there a better option ?

Just wander to halfords like said and geet a Carrera, it will do the job just fine.

last week in May was quite nice....

halfords is a good bet, try your local independant too who might stock something suitable from the likes of Raleigh, Dawes or Ridgeback which are probably considered far too untrendy for the likes of Evans et al.

Not sure howe much the female Boardman's start at but they looked bloody lovely last time I was in there and the Boardman's seem to be very very light in comparison to everything else out there at a similar price point. Mine is 11.8kg where as most others are at least 2kg on top. (Makes no difference at all when I get on one!!! 2kg is a drop in the ocean!)

Hope I can piggy back on this thread rather than start my own.

I was looking to do the same thing (for less - £200, after it was clear £150 isn't enough for something focused on country tracks) for my other half. Went into Halfords and two independents and seemed to deal with a string of bored people who couldn't be bothered. Saw a couple of Raleigh ones within budget but I wasn't overly impressed - I paid £300 for a Schwinn Mesa about 4 years ago and was expecting the same sort of quality and kit, and wasn't seeing it.

Is that budget unrealistic or do I just need to shop about more?

Yup.

Specialized Sirrus/Vita Sport - fastest, lightest hybrid for the money, I wouldn't bother with cheap suspension or discs for road or bridleways. Kona Dew Deluxe good slightly heavier duty option.

How much do I need to spend then?

The Schwinn mesa is a pretty good bike from memory - maybe £400, £450.

It cost me around £300-350 in 2007 (although I did shop around online.)

Which manufacturers/models are of a reasonably similar spec in ladies bikes? I'm not going to spend more than £300 regardless - I just can't afford any more.

I know sod all about bikes but I've had two Schwinn bikes and thought they were brilliant - I think the first was a Frontier (bought in 2002/3 when I was using it for a 6 mile round commute and some weekend off roading) and the Mesa, so I'm starting to look at their ladies options on the theory that it should be a safe bet. Though that consists of the Frontier Sport it seems, at £250:

I've no idea who else is worth looking at. Any thoughts on the above?
