Oh no.

Without warning I've caught the new bike bug!

This time I fancy a racy carbon frame with integrated gear system, SS is too restrictive and I don't really want another gear faffage.

Are off the shelf bike available in this config or is it an impossible ask?

I notice that OnOne are now doing the 456 in carbon..

I have a rather tired looking Yeti 575 all set to finance this latest adventure!

Chain tensioner, horizontal/sliding dropouts, eccentric bottom bracket.

Pick one!

Maybe start with this...

edit: Also, there are mixed reports of the durability of Alfine hubs for off-road use.

I've read nothing but praise for them. People seem to agree they are something of a faff to set up initially but once thats done they are bulletproof.

I was looking at the fully built version earlier, awesome value.

My off-roading these days is limited to the local forest so I should imagine Alfine would be durable enough.

Alfine 11 snuff pics

FWIW, I'm currently building a drop-bar Alfine 11/Versa commuter tank bike, but that's not going to do much off-road.

Nope, I killed my 8-speed Alfine hub after a couple of years use. Annoyingly it's a really small, cheap part I need: the plastic ring that holds the innermost roller bearings in place was mashed. Perhaps something to do with the extra torque exerted on a 29er hub compared to a 26" wheel.

Shimano don't/won't offer the replacement bit of plastic - can only sell me an entire hub internal at approx £100...

See pics of the buggered hub here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/a11y_m/sets/721576258...

I'm waiting until someone builds an internal gearbox located inside the main triangle, at a decent price and weight - that would be awesome for MTBing.

I've read that the 11sp is rated for off-road use, although as the thread I posted above shows, there are people who've had problems. But then this is the internet, home of exploding TVRs and 996 RMS issues.

One thing which put me off building a hub geared off-roader was the hassle of fixing a puncture. This video, in particular:

Looked at building a '5 with a speedhub. Found some people who had done it. Because the hub is >1kg it dulled the responce of the rear suspension.

That's precisely the idea I like - but I'd be looking for 5-6" travel and not DH! Think I read about it in Dirt mag but could be wrong, certainly seen it before somewhere.
