Hi

Looking to get a new saddle for my Dawes hybrid, what sort of things should you be looking for, presumably its difficult to asses the fit/comfort of a saddle before buying one?

It's definitely a matter of personal taste, but you could do a LOT worse than invest in a Charge Spoon wink

Totally agree on both counts! Charge Spoon would be my first choice followed by a WTB V, both cheap as chips and comfy as a comfy thing!

Those look pretty good, and cheap smile

Whats the advantage with more expensive saddles - this being PH I was thinking any recommendations would come in at ten times that price and be made from either 2 micron thin carbon fibre or the leather of some rare Amazonian goat wink

A mate bought a Spoon a few months ago after reading lots of good things on STW, 3 rides later he had re-named it the Charge Numb-cock & gave up on it. I tried it out on my road bike & have found it fine, including a couple of century rides, so if your arse is the right shape it will be fine !

It's all down to your ass shape, not everyone is the same.

If you have a Specialized store near you then they can measure your arse and tell you the correct width of saddle, then check out Cyclestore UK where they are doing some 50% off deals on saddles, or the store may price match.

My mate has this saddle and loves it, there are others on the site as well.

Ordered the Spoon saddle today, based on the very positive feedback for it.

If I don't get on with it, its cheap enough to migrate to my pub hack mountain bike, and I can give the Specialized a go

Thanks for the suggestions

I have Rocket Vs on my my MTBs and before I sold my road bike I had a Spesh Alias on it that was sized to my sit bones. After I had done the Etap du Dales the only bit of me that didn't hurt was my ass

its all about - how you set the saddle up in the first place - ANY saddle will be nut-numbing if its set incorrectly - get a spirit-level and set it up perfectly flat to start with - if its still uncomfortable - move it SLIGHTLY towards the painful area (and I mean SLIGHTLY) so that you are sitting on your SIT (not st) bones!

LOL

Another vote for the Charge Spoon, it's what I run on my Scott. Excellent value!

What about for the more powerfully built rider (fat) ? After about 20 odd miles my arse starts to ache, I have good endura shorts but I could do with a more comfortable saddle.

I can reccommend investing in a "gel saddle" , check out Amazon for around 14 pounds and it simply fits over your exsisting saddle ,
