I'm looking for abit of advice about how I can reclaim the VAT for tools I have purchased myself for work, I've had a look at various websites but cannot find a solid answer.
I've spent over £1500 in the last 6 months so there is over £300 in VAT that I should be entitled to claim back. There are plenty of companies advertising this service but they all take some sort of fee + upto 20% of the rebate for what looks like forwarding a couple of forms and my receipts to HMRC.

Any useful advice is much appreciated.

Are you a self-employed, VAT registered business?

Or are you just an employee?

Just an employee of a small independent garage.

No way you can reclaim VAT then.

You MIGHT be able to make an Income Tax claim for use of your own tools in carrying out your employment tasks but ONLY if your employer insists you use your own tools and doesn't supply you with any such tools himself.

If you CHOSE to use your own tools, then you cannot make a claim.

Pay for the tools yourself, get the invoice made out to your employer and ask him/her to claim the VAT back for you if you offer them a few quid.

I get something like £60 a year extra on my tax allowance for tools wear and tear as an employee but I had to apply for it. They do back date up to 6 years I believe.

The tax relief is purely for maintaining and repair of the tools and not for the initial purchase. I'm also entitled to claim for cleaning of uniform but can only claim for tools or uniform not both!

You'll need to apply to your local tax office, once done it becomes automatic from then onwards.

Here's a guide to the flat rates you can claim

After 5 April 2012, back claims are being restricted to three years, as opposed to the curent six.

It's also a pretty stupid fraud since the slightest hint of an audit will show that the employer didn't pay for the tools.

Someone at work thinks you can claim tax back on things like boots that you need for work, is this correct?

You shouldn't have to buy your own safety boots. I know I'm entitled to a pair every six months, granted usually a crappy pair, but they're still free smile

IIRC Safety boots are tax free anyway.

If the employye HAS to buy his own then yes, he can make that claim.

"Protective/safety closthing wear" is allowed if the employee has to buy his/her own.

I think you mean "VAT Free" - which is not always the case and is irrelevant for an employee who wants to make an Income Tax claim for the purchase of such items.

Im in the same boat. I had to send a letter stating what tools i have to buy, along with all your personal details. This was on friday so i will let you know the outcome.

You can state if you want your tax code lowering or a cheque. I asked for cheque due to back payment for the last 4 years.

Excellent, cheers.
I would opt for a cheque too as I've all ready had months of grief over my tax code.

Get your claim in as soon as you can. At the moment you can go back six tax years but that is dropping down to three on 6 April 2012.
