Royal Navy waiting list

I passed the RT in March (out of 25 of us only 10/11 passed) and have been told to wait for my fitness/medical tests and final interview. I intend to join as a Communication Technician for the surface fleet. Now I was made fully aware that the waiting time is 2-3 years for all departments to be called up for training and I'm completely cool with that, but I now know of at least 4 people who were told "3 years" last year, and all of them have gone in this year, and they didn't ask to go on the Subs to get in quicker or change departments. Everytime I ring the career office (every month) depending on who I speak to, I'm told between 22 and 30 months. I intend to go down there when I have a day off. Anyone here got any experience with this?
Waiting times are not an exact science. Based upon average outflow, this is where they are getting their inflow rates from. It only takes a few extra to get sacked, injured, decide to leave early or a bit of a reorganisation and all of a sudden your odds increase. I'd pack my bags now and be ready! Good luck!
Hello mate and first of all well done on passing your RT! The current waiting time for Comms Tech is 24 months. I must stress, this is merely a guide as to how long it may take to join from the date of your test, based on an estimate on future manning requirements. Some jobs with shorter waits can be processed straight away, ie paperwork>medical>fitness test>interview etc. Others (like yourself) will be put into Pending and brought forward for processing when an opening occurs. Hope this is all making sense!
In the meantime keep your fitness up, read up on your chosen job and let the AFCO know if any of your personal details change. Let them do the rest, they will contact you every 6 months minimum to keep you up to date.

Thanks to you both It's 110% what I want to do and I'm committed to working towards getting in. I have a family history of the armed forces (my great uncle and namesake served on the HMS Eagle in WW2 and went down with her) and I should of done it 7 years ago when I left school. I don't mind waiting for it, I'm making myself known at the careers office anyway, I call that often

Spoke to the recruitment office last week, it looks like waiting lists are slowly coming down, I could potentially be looking at very late 2012/early 2013 (20ish months since passing test) but obviously that isn't set in stone. Still no word on medical or fitness tests. Judging by the ads on the TV/Internet the RN are on a bit of a recruitment drive, which is hopefully good news for me.

I thought the main campaigns at the moment are focusing on the reserve services for the whole FR20 project? if the navy is anything like the TA the reserves training is run by other members of the reserves ie not the same people who train the regulars, so don't judge timelines by that.Spoke to the recruitment office last week, it looks like waiting lists are slowly coming down, I could potentially be looking at very late 2012/early 2013 (20ish months since passing test) but obviously that isn't set in stone. Well the majority of adverts seem to focus on engineering anyway, not my field. I'm strictly going by what the Recruitment office and official Facebook page is telling me- who are both saying roughly 20-22 months, so 2 years, which is the ballpark figure many people who I have talked to have started training recently. I am under no illusion that is guaranteed and I know it's subject to change and I could be waiting a lot longer, which is something I'm fine with. However I guess it's encouraging to see them actively recruiting, even if it isn't for what I'm doing.I was in circa '99-'06.
I joined as a marine engineer. ( Raleigh,Sultan,illustrious,CFM portsmouth,Cardiff,Nottingham,civvy street.)
I had to wait 12 months back in '98. Another way of getting in early is to join another branch and career change/side entry to another branch when you have served 6 months or thereabouts.
Back when I was in, lads were joining as "seaman specialists" on a temporary contract (2years) then would side step into another job when their 2 years were up.
Might be another option for you.

Just heard that I'm in the next lot of people to be called forward for the fitness/medical tests for my chosen area. The guys who sat the test between late 2010/early 2011 were called forward recently. Still likely to be months and months away and possibly not even this year, but it's a step in the right direction!
