Recommendations please:

Wheels (turbo II or Sport Techno)?

Steering wheel (leather, thicker)?

Short shift (how uncomfortable does this make shifting for daily driving vs advantages re gearstick travel)?

Any other must haves?

Don't know what the current options available are, but a while ago we had a thread when getcarter was speccing his car.

Thanks. I saw the thread but it didn't really address most of my key questions. Any thoughts?

As I said I don't know what the current options are. The thing to remmeber is you rarely get any money back from options at resale time. I know the satnav is fitted as standard now and they leave a DIN slot in the centre console which is good.

Unless you are going to get noticable use from the options I'd there seems little point in buying them.

Wheels - I'd go standard.
Steering Wheel - I'd go standard.
Short shift - Not driven so can't comment.

To be honest the questions you've asked come down to personal preference.

Wheels - which ones suit your car? Most go for standard but there are some colours that suit other wheel designs.

Steering Wheel - do you have big hands? if so go for the thicker one? on the contrary, if you've got small hands a thicker one may feel uncomfortable. Try and see.

Short shift - personal preference again.

In terms of resale value you can't go too far wrong with the above 3 parameters. The 997 and 998 will hit residuals to a higher extent than options.

Standard wheels look good and aid brake cooling more.

I am also a fan of the standard steering wheel. In fact the 996TT is pretty well specked up to the nines anyhow. I prefer things standard generally. It is the driving that makes the 996TT special. People will always buy such cars on condition, not options.

A couple of contradictions to the above :-)

The BOSE pre-amp / speaker set is great. Black with dark brown (natural) leather is a good colour combo in my opinion.

No comment on short throw as never used it.

I suggest a tracker!

Also heated seats are so cheap you might as well spec them.

I too like the std wheels.

If I were buying now I'd spec the 'S' and try and leave out the Ceramic brakes. If the S is not an option, then I'm guessing the X50 pack is still available, and is probably a stack cheaper.

Money NOT well spent but my God it's quick.

Never tried a short throw, but the std shift is the best I've felt in any car (inc Aston, Ferrari, Caterham etc). If it's a cost option, I'd leave it out unless you are buying as a track car - in which case, buy a GT3.

Am I alone in thinking the worst aspect of the 996 is its steering wheel? Huge.

I have often considered replacing the airbagged monstrosity in my Carrera to a Momo Corse, but wouldn't be in keeping with the rest of the interior so have left it alone.

If I ever get that GT3 with bucket seats and harness the first thing to go will be the jumbo-size serving plate looming out of the dashboard.

Am I wrong or doesn't the TT get the smaller sports steeing wheel as std? I'd check... can't remember now as Mr McEwan's has intervened in the interim.

The one I have is just fine (and I'm used to a Caterham Momo)

The PCM is now standard fit as is the Bose sound system, sports seats are a NCO & it also has sunroof, drivers seat with full memory,Xenons, auto-dim mirrors & rain sensor etc etc. As the other guys say extra's are down to personal taste, for me I'd have.......
1/Cruise control (for all the speed check area's)
2/Heated seats (sports) with porsche crests stamped in the back.
A few extra's lift the interior..
3/Leather centre tunnel with Turbo logo on the rear cubby box (or at least the logo part only).
4/alloy gear lever & handbrake.
5/ Silver dials are also nice.
I've seen the techno wheels on a TT & didn't like them as much as standard, but it's all down to your taste.
6/ If you are feeling flush there is also the small matter of the X-50 pack !!!!!!
