Think we should publicise the charity attempt in it's own thread or a sticky. I'll definitely be donating. The first few donations at that the bottom of the page brought a lump to my throat - such a sad accident.

I am not saying you are wrong, I have no idea either way but would they be switched on?

I can't find a video on you tube that shows them displaying with them switched on?

What is your authority on them?
I'm not a pilot or authority in them, however I believe they can be switched on in poor weather or when doing low flying. Just makes them more visible to other aircraft in more crowded airspace. I can't see that being the cause for the crash. As can be seen in my pic above of the aircraft departing Fairford, I have caught one with it's strobe flashing there. I wouldn't read too much into it.

Ta smile

I don't think they use them all the time, possibly only in poor weather or whilst flying in the circuit. This was a run in and break over the airfield, so it could be that they were switched on for that reason.

For all those who feel the pain of his loss, reflect on this.

His widow, Emma is taking his place on a coast to coast charity cycle ride in October.

Details, and how to donate, here.

Go on, for the price of a few litres of unleaded you can make your voice heard directly to her.
Once word really gets round about this, I'll be amazed if she doesn't comfortably exceed the £50k target on her own.

Good work.

Well that's sorted that one then. If only the media would consult PH before writing their stories!

This. They only use the strobe when flying the flat display, taking off, or landing.

They are called 'Anti-Collision Lights' (commonly referred to as 'Anti-Colls'). A pair are fitted to the Hawk, the upper one lies just aft of the rear cockpit, the lower just forward of the airbrake; each is independently switchable between OFF/RED/WHITE, the WHITE being a 'strobe', the RED merely being a flashing light.

SOP on the ground is UPPER RED, LOWER OFF so as not to blind the Groundcrew. As part of the Pre Take Off Checks you would select both to WHITE (although at night RED would be the preferred setting). Upon entering IMC you tend to switch both to RED because the strobing effect can be quite disorientating.

I am surprised that that a/c has the WHITE strobe running because in Formation one would normally switch them to RED, both to prevent disorientation and/or blinding those trying to formate upon you.

I was told a story from a pilot about doing joint missions with the USAF. Our boys were doing night manoeuvres using night vision goggles and they had to ask the Septic Tanks quite sternly to turn off their Anti Cols because they were blinding the RAF through the goggles.

Unashamed "bump" to get this back to the top, the speed of donations are increasing, slowly, it was at £315 this morning, but looks like it's going to go viral, and so it should !

C'mon peeps, who else is in for a tenner at least ?

Not sure what to make of that really......... she is only getting the money because of the publicity of her husbands death. Kinda happy-sad in a way.

The harrier had some trick "tactical" IR lighting that could be preset via a controller to the codes of the day. Never did see similar arrangements on any other RAF aircraft whilst I was "in".

Oh and they are called anti-collision beacons...

I remember that being a point of contention with the Groundcrew on several Fleets.

AP101B (the Aircrew Manual) always referred to them as Anti-Collision Lights, although things may well have changed. smile

Can we read into the flight clearance so soon that they have a pretty good idea as to what the cause may be?

Not at all. But it does seem that the overall fleet has been given the all clear.

Heard a rumour it was a birdstrike through the canopy.

Came from a contact at BAe.

Aircraft Publicaton, not strictly for aircrew. I/R / Anti Collision Beacons on Harrier at least.

I've heard the bird strike through the canopy rumour this morning also, although would expect a lot more visible debris from the initial impact.
