Dear All, i need the benefit of your collective experience!

Out for a drive yesterday my eye was drawn to something I'd never noticed before, my oil pressure gauge seemed to be all over the place.

About 2 miles into my journey, from cold, I pulled up at some lights and the oil pressure gauge read less than 10psi, almost zero........didn't panic but thought it was strange as I'd never noticed it do that before. Anyway throughout the drive the gauge did rise to 60 at about 2.5k revs but also gave readings less than this at the same revs and then would register 30psi at idle at other times.

The readings seemed to bear little relation to the engine revs, and the gauge seemed very slow to respond.

When I pulled back into my garage the reading was back at 10 at idle. Left the car for 15 mins, went and started it again and at idle the pressure was 45psi!

So I'm guessing that I have a problem with the sender unit? How likely is it that it might be related to the oil pressure relief valve.

My car is a standard 400 with 88k on the clock, it uses zero oil between services and sounds / pulls / drives beautifully and it performed normally throughout yesterdays debacle.

Any pointers? My small issue is that the car is currently here with me in Luxembourg and specialist mechanics/ knowledge is a bit thin on the ground!

Thanks in anticipation of your responses!

Simon

Most likely just the wire breaking off the connector to the sender.

Hi Simon,

Had a similar problem last week, pressure reading erratic, seemed to drop when accelerating and then went to zero and stayed there. The engine didn't turn itself into a bag of bits so fairly confident the pressure is okay.
I have ordered a sender unit and will hopefully pick this up tomorrow or Wednesday. Will probably find it's just a loose wire but thought I might as well change it while I'm crawling under the car.
Will let you know how I get on.

Hi, I'm planning to get one from Racing Green TVR, I've tried calling them today.......and forgot about the Bank Holiday! The joys of working abroard whilst you lot are all enjoying the glorious bank holiday weather no doubt......;-)

I'll let you know how I get on, they're about £60 iirc.

Gonna have a look at the spade connectors this evening before shelling out.

Cheers,

Simon

Thanks Chimpaholic, I had fiddle with the wire last night and had a general clean up around the sender unit and normal service was resumed although for £16 I might just change it anyway.

Thanks guys for all your input.

The one I bought didn't last very long so if it is now working I would leave well alone.

Failing that this might be worth a try:

Four times cheaper than one from a TVR specialist, even if my cheapo Ebay sender only lasts a couple of years it will still be way cheaper to just buy another one.

So far so good, 5 months and 5,000 miles later and my cheapo Ebay sender is still working perfectly.

TBH I see no reason why it will be any less reliable than the TVR one that failed after 15 years service.
