"Ian Henderson of Llanberis Mountain Rescue said the emergency services or national park officers would never attempt to drive up Snowdon."

Forgive me, but it looks like the train track itself isn't unreasonably steep. I know it's a rack and pinion railway but a modernish 4x4 driven by someone that knows what they're doing should find it achievable, surely?

Oh, and who was, it, own up... hehe

I don't find it odd that there's a 4x4 that far up, I find it odd that off all the 4x4's, a Vauxhall frontera made it up there.

By that logic, BMW's should be good in the snow, and Porche's should understeer horruendously.

Whats the mystery?

Its got a rear plate, why dont the fuzz run it, contact the owner and ask WTF their car is doing up Snowdon?

If nothing else, that railway looks pretty narrow gauge - you could probably just stick two wheels on either side of the tracks and drive up the sleepers if it was the early hours of the morning and the trains weren't running! smile

Driving next to the railway you could get a bmw 6 series to the top of snowdon. Rough, steep, treacherous it is not.

Ah... Well, having owned the Isuzu variant, I can tell you that they aren't. Got me through plenty of themAdirondack national park without as much as a hiccup. Pulled a few other more 'reputable' Marques out along the way as well. Strong rear diff, good stock clearance, decent, simple, reliable engines, fully boxed frames, decent enough transfer box stock, (I lowered mine by 50% however), and so on.

Nowt worse than blanket statements, and I see neither of you have actually owned one...

Many moons ago I owned a `94 lwb 2.4 petrol, would go anywhere, never struggled in the snow, never let me down, just liked fuel at an alarming rate. It`s still going strong too, saw it about only a couple of weeks ago!

Hm. I was up there for the first time at about 1930 yesterday and it was there then. I didnt think anything of it really and assumed it was normal - its not a difficult route to get up there and it had proper off road tyres on it.

Fronteras may have some known mechanical and build quality issues, but they're generally pretty capable off road and tough as old boots.
