Bonnet release cable replacement
Discussion
The bonnet opens fine but I have to push the handle back to get it to shut OK maybe because the cable outer has got a bit squashed up near the catch and the whole cable (inner and outer) could do with being replaced (made worse by the inner having lost a couple of strands when I took it out to lubricate it ...) so the question is how easy is it to fit a new cable? I note that it appears under the bonnet from a rubber tube thing so wonder if that goes all the way from inside the car or only at the outer bulkhead - in which case I might need to fiddle round with the trim - so any info about doing this?

Done this recently and is straight forward. If you get a torch and stick your head in the drivers footwell and look up, you will be able to see the release cable. If I remember it runs through the left side of the pedel box and then along the top of it and then loops around to the handle mounting bracket. No trim to remove.
MGB bonnet release cables are very similar (info from another forum member) but will need to be trimmed to fit.
Quite a straightforward job and also worth running a backup release in case of future failure as if it sticks shut the bonnet will need to be smashed to get it open.
I ran a second cable inner over the engine (it locates conveniently in a drilled hole in the throttle bracket) and fed it down past the chassis and nearside inner wing and ty-wraped it to the lower chassis rail. If the normal release fails a simple job to release the bonnet.

Thats what I have been using for the last 4 years about £10 from memory and an absolute breeze to fit just make sure the outer part of the cable as a nylon sheath type covering rather than bare as the inner will seize rapidly after fitting as the scuttle area of these cars allows water to drain over said cable this style is what your after http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/NEW-MGB-ROADSTER-GT-BONN...Edited by Simon says on Friday 9th September 12:05
Thanks for the info - I'll get one of the MGB cables as suggested.

Ps Thinking about the suggestion of an emergency cable - is there another way of opening the catch if there is a problem - I'd always though that maybe you could get at the catch from underneath (using a ramp) but then thinking about it the manifolds are in the way ....
