2.0 TFSI Drinking Oil

Hi all,

I have this engine in an A4 S Tronic. I have covered some 5000 miles over the past 6 weeks and have had to top it up twice with oil.

Is anyone aware of any issues with this engine regarding this or is this normal???

How much have you put in each time?

Regardless of the amount thought, I would be concerned.

Take the under body tray off, look for oil leaked onto the tray and oil leaks on the engine.

It recommends to top it up by 1 ltr in the manual which is what I've done. Can't see any leaks anywhere but I haven't had a proper inspection.

The car is only 1 year old with about 10k on the clock so seems a bit odd.

Think I'll book it into the garage.

I recently had a problem with a VAG 1.4 TSFI engine. After a lot of wrangling the engine was replaced. That was after 5,000 miles and on a car that had a problem with oil consumption from new.

It was an extremely tortuous negotiation that led to the engine replacement. Feel free to PM if you want any more information and I'm happy to pass on my contact numbers to you if you want to discuss.

Only had a couple of minor top ups with our 2.0T in our Audi A4.

Probably half a litre every 12 months and 10k.

All under warranty.

Had to undergo two different oil consumption tests first. Initially they topped up the engine and had me do 1,000 miles. I think they were sceptical that I was putting in the amounts that I was. They then did a test based on the weight of oil used over a precise distance and then undertook the relevant conversion of grams to litres. They showed me the instruction from Milton Keynes that ran to two pages of A4. Consumption was measured at 1.5 litres every 1,000 miles.

Then they wanted to strip the engine and start replacing piston rings. At that point I threated legal proceedings and it was then that they relented.

For the sake of a call I suspect you might benefit from hearing more of my experience.

Well, just spoken to my local Audi dealer and they tell me that thats fairly normal consumption. Infact he stated that 0.5 ltr every 600 miles is their guideline.... bks!!

Sorry I didn't explain. I've actually only owned it for 6 weeks so before that it had only covered around 5k over approx 11 months.

Sorry I didn't explain. I've actually only owned it for 6 weeks so before that it had only covered around 5k over approx 11 months.

Ah OK, firstly you are going to have to monitor the situation very carefully, there is a wide variance in oil consumption;

VW have their own limits (lots basically) and every engine will be different, my one uses 1 to 1.5 litres every 10,000 miles.

That seems fairly reasonable, I wouldn't be unhappy with that.

I've started a log so I can keep track of how much I'm getting through. At the moment its seems to have been approx 1 ltr every 2500 miles.

My 2.0 litre diesel drank oil for the first 12,000 miles after the first service it magically stopped and i have never needed to top it up between services since

My old Octy vRS needed a small top-up every other month.
My new Octy (with the TSI rather than TFSI engine) has nearly 9k miles on the clock and the original, from factory fill of oil is still just below the MAX line.

Seems some engines drink, other's don't and they cover themselves by saying they all do and if yours doesn't your one of the "lucky ones".
