OK thanks....

I wondered if a monitor could be taken from the USB outputs?
It can - but you need a USB graphics adapter and performance may not be fantastic - particularly for high quality video.

My iPhone 5S and iPad 2 have both stopped wifi syncing to my MBA since I updated them both to ios 8.0.2

I've manually connected both devices to the MBA and they sync then.

I've checked the sync over wifi box for both devices in iTunes.

If i try and force a sync both the iPhone and iPad seem unable to find the MBA on the wifi network. I've tried doing this on two different wifi networks (where again, they both wifi synced) but no joy.

Apple support gives no troubleshooting guidance, just says to do what I've already done re manually connecting and checking the boxes.

Any advice?

I've had this, have you switched your phone and iPad off and back on again? Worked for me.

Bit of a pathetic question coming up, sorry in advance paperbag

After years of using a MacBook Pro for everything, including magazine layouts, I've decided to treat myself to a 21.5in iMac. My question is, can I initiate/commission the new iMac from my old MBP (via my external drive) and thereby end up with an exact copy of the MBP on the new machine (including all the software)? Or am I being a bit of a nit?

Yes you can migrate from one to the other very easily, either completely or selectively. Check the OS X version on the MBP and if there any differences in software versions/requirements for Yosemite.

Ah I didn't know about Yosemite, I see it's just launched. My MBP is on Mavericks, will this be a problem on the transfer to the new iMac? Should I update the MBP to Yosemite before I do it?
In an ideal world I'd like the two machines to be identical.

I'm not sure it makes any difference, but I'd probably update the MBP first - it's free and you are then migrating like to like.

Edited to add, if you buy the iMac from an Apple store, you can probably get them to do the migration....

Thanks Leithen, your advice is much appreciated, I was apprehensive that I might not be able to get the software over for some licensing reason.

No problem, happy to help - it's why this thread was created. Have a look at this Apple Support Page regarding upgrading to Yosemite, and then follow the migration links. It appears that migration is the same as it was in Mavericks.

Thanks again, I've just done the Yosemite upgrade on my MBP, it took a couple of hours with lots of queasy pauses where nothing seemed to be happening, an Apple minute seems to be rather longer that a GMT minute but it got there in the end.

Am liking this Yosemite, nice to see Apple doing something right again after a long dodgy period of silly stuff (I've used Macs for work since the first SE).
One thing though, which I hoped might be resolved by the upgrade: my MBP still doesn't do two-finger up and down scrolling within folders, websites, documents, anything. Daughter and partner who both have MBPs find this weird.

At the end of a very long thread on the 'real' Mac support thread (Apple Support Communities) all suggesting various fixes that didn't work for me I finally found the answer - which is that you have to go to Accessibility in the SysPrefs, then choose "Mouse & Trackpad" from the list, then click the "Trackpad Options" button and then click the "Scrolling" button. Choose the "with inertia" option and hey presto! For the first time I have two-finger scrolling. Seems odd that this wouldn't be under the Trackpad options but who cares, it's all fixed.

Weird that it was unselected - good to know where to look though, well done.

The Word icons on my Desktop have gone blank? (i.e. blank doc icon with turned-down corner).
MS Office '11, newly installed (a week or so ago), problem doesn't affect Powerpoint or Excel docs.
(The Word docs in question open fine, and they were showing up as proper Word icons on the Desktop before Yosemite.)

Try repairing permissions in Disk Utility, it's the kind of borked thing that can be fixed by doing this. If that doesn't work then try toggling the show icon preview box in Finder>View>Show View Options>

First use of my Mac Mini today since upgrading to Yosemite. On the whole I like, but the machine feels a bit more sluggish at times. Can anyone help with this problem that may, or may not, be to do with the upgrade. There has been an Office update recently so it may be to do with that also.

When typing in Word, my keyboard ceases to work after a while, I can still select items and perform tasks with the mouse, but can't type anything. The keyboard works fine with everything else. If I close Word and reopen it fixes temporarily, but happens again after a short while.

Google brings up another person who had this problem, but no solution.

Is it possible to create a wifi network and join another on the same macbook pro? Its so I can use Air Display with my ipad in uni. A fairly pointless exercise according to my mum, brother and girlfriend. But I like the idea of more screen 'real estate'.

Hate the term screen real estate.

Just so I'm understanding correctly, your MBP is at home, your iPad is at Uni and you want to connect to the iPad from home via Airplay?

You appear to need an App for that - for example Air Display . Reviews aren't great however...
