How many are we still flying? Thought they'd all retired, yet one just flew over here east to west, I guess on descent for Brize. Lovely smile

As of 2010, some 15 examples of the VC10 remain in active service with the Royal Air Force, all of which are to be retired by around 2015.

We are down to 13 now after two were chopped for spares earlier in the year.

bloody fantastic planes!!

the way my Pc/Desk/Room/building shakes when one roars over the top leaving Edinburgh - usually before or after the Tattoo, is superb! - well done the RAF for not giving a stuff about noise abatement! Always seem to be in a lower climb-rate than civilian stuff .

we have had contractors diving under the desks when they go over

only Concorde on its last day has made more noise!

The fastest, even to this day, subsonic crossing of the Atlantic was carried out by one of the RAFs VC10 fleet when it was still a civvie airliner

Do you reckon there is any chance of getting someone to paint up a VC-10 in BOAC or early BA colours? I reckon it would look so very cool!

Pity they no longer meet passenger safety requirements and are thus "tankers" unless some polly has the balls to authorise the exception....

You made me a little homesick posting that clip, since leaving Brize I don't hear that taxy-whine and window rattling cold morning take off anymore. cry
