HNC units are taken from HND/FDs, and HND/FD units are taken from degrees. Hence, I shared lectures with those on the FD, and both those with an HNC and those with an FD could "top-up" to a degree. The HNC just had to be topped up to an FD first.

Holy thread resurrection! just to update this old thread, I have just received conformation that I passed my HNC with merits. I think the plan is to work for a year or two now earning some decent money as my apprenticeship is complete. After that and with some cash behind me I plan on either going to university or at least changing jobs as I cannot see my current employer lasting much longer.
So if anyone knows any jobs suitable for someone with a HNC in mech eng then let me know.

What are you after careerwise?

Merchant Navy is always looking for Engineers, and with what you have already you could probably bypass most of the bullst that cadets go through, might mean 6 months or so at college (and you'll be paid) and a few at sea. They do HNDs and Foundation Degrees, both of which can be topped up to a BEng (Hons) later if you like.

If I could relive life options, I would look at this OP.

Merchant or RN. Good transferable skills with many options afterwards.

Indeed, there's no requirement to work at sea once qualified

I left school with farly poor GCSES and did NVQ level 2 & 3 in electronics and microprocessors I got some diplomas and stuff as well. I decided to apply to University in 2000 but I had to do a foundation year of maths and physics before I could start the degree course. so, 4 years at Uni. I loved every minute of it and it changed my life completely. Also, just 10 years later, I've paid off my student loan. Wooo.
