Just curious really - is there any way I can find out what it is and where it's going? I know it's a helicopter, it's clearly quite low, and it's always at the same time c11pm each night.

There are always Pumas and Merlins out of Benson practising dust offs in the fields where I live, close to Bicester in Oxon.

I'm in Stratton Audley, so may be what I hear - but always a single aircraft and always the same time?

Almost certainly - I'm in Marsh Gibbon. Merlins and Pumas in pairs, one often flying dark.

Well there are a couple of helos out our way - a wobbly Rotorway (or similar) and a Jet Ranger. At the risk of going massively O/T, do you frequent the Red Lion at all?

Sometimes - but I'm not what you'd call a regular (Frank's still polite to me) - Deuchars is OK, but there are much nicer IPAs at home smile

Agree with other posters that if you're in Oxfordshire you probably live on a night low-level NVG route and it's a Merlin or Puma from Benson.

I live between Benson and Odiham and have Chinnys etc come over low on NVGs at 2am all the time.

Other posters' views have been confirmed as correct. I live quite close to the airfield in Bicester, which is en route, it seems.

I'm in Bainton, just t'other side of Bicester, we also get the odd C-130 come over very very low.

I often pass over at about 35,000ft if I'm on an EDI or INV back to LGW, but I try and keep the noise down.
