Was hoping to gain an insight into what it is like?

Currently a Financial controller at a FTSE-100.

I have been considered for a potential opening in a commercial environment. However, my background is predominately month end accounts, mergers and projects etc.

The role is very far removed from month end reporting. More to do with bids, tenders and pricing etc...

Is this a good career move for the future? I can't bear month ends anymore!

I made a similar move earlier this year. After 5 years audit (medium sized firm followed by Big4) and a further 5 in a variety of financial controller roles (in a large FTSE100 company) I started a more commercially focused role in May (same co).

Reasons for this were partly, having enjoyed a lot of success in the FC roles, a desire for a change and partly recognition of the fact that I needed to broaden my CV if I really wanted the broadly based generalist career I was always talking about...

The challenges are very different and I won't pretend that the transition has always been easy. However, it has been tremendously rewarding and I've learnt a lot. Some of my prior experience has been useful but nevertheless it's been a fairly steep learning curve. On balance I would say that it has certainly been career-enhancing.

Ultimately, if it isn't for you there'll always be another FC role to go back to (unless they're all in India by then- a different thread perhaps...). I'd say go for it!
