Possibly be getting myself into a position for a local IT company based in Aston,Birmingham, which will mean that I don't have to do the 110mile commute to Derby daily.

Everything sounds good,it's less money, but I end up with more in my pocket each month as i'm not spending it on fuel, and open's up a few hour's extra a week to study further to get a better position etc etc

Now,the only drawback i'm seeing so far,is that it will be on a 3 month rolling contract, where as i'm permanent at the moment.

Just like everyone else,i've got bill's and a car to pay for,and don't want to end up jobless.

Wanting to know anything that I should be aware about,in these kind of situations? It's for a large IT firm, and I know of a few people who were employed by them, and managed to go up the career ladder quite quickly and had no issues with the 3 month contract part.

Anything to stop them from say "no renewal?" I'm currently a top performer on my team, could say the person who does "the most" as otherwise I get bored and end up looking for thing's to do. So my work performance wouldn't be bad.

Assume this is not a "Contractor" role where you need to go via third party, but a contract direct with the company.

For the first 12 months you will be on Probation anyway, and so can be made redundant without the normal processes applying.
I believe (not my area of expertise, but this is the Internet wink ) that after two years, any temporary contract assumes the same rights in terms of redundancy etc as a "permanent" contract.

If the role is made redundant you only really have your notice period as protection anyway

Check the exact terms of the contract. Are you invoicing them and therefore responsible for tax etc? I think you should research IR35 carefully.

Nope, nothing at all. That's the beauty of contracting.
Having said that, unless there's some kind of extreme change in funding it's very rare to see good developers being let go.
