I want to spray some cadium plated surfaces in my engine bay. Will a light scuff and etch primer be sufficient prep?

Not so sure about cadmium. But I can tell you the prep for zinc.

First of all degrease, not with gunk, petrol or white spirit, use a pre-paint prep or at least a brake cleaning solvent.

Apply a coat of T.wash this is a light acid based indicator surface prep for galvanised coatings primarily, it goes on like water and the zinc will react by going a blue grey this now indicates it is ready to paint.

If the section is exposed to a lot of hard use then I would recommend an epoxy primer, followed by a topcoat of your choice.

You can get these products from www.rust.co.uk if you have a look on the site under surface prep you will find the t.wash/prep. If you buy any stuff, on check out put reference Piston heads I'll give you a discount this will be taken off when we process you payment.

For cadmium I would have thought the cleaning solvent first followed by the epoxy primer would be sufficient. Epoxy primers go for the Custom 421 Epoxy. You will find this on the body work page.

This discount will be available to all piston heads forum members.

Hope you don't mind the pitch, but nobody else was coming forward
