I remember reading somewhere that the engine in the early MX5s is the same as the Mazda 323 1.6 turbo,
without the turbo of course.

Now the Mrs has got a 1996 1.6 MX5 and she wants a bit more poke. (insert nob gag here)

So instead of paying out for a HKS or similar turbo kit at circa to 2,000 quid.

Could the engine from a 323 turbo be transplanted?
Or could the turbo and manifold and other bits be taken off a 323 and fitted to the MX5?

Anyone with any knowledge about this?

Well, considering you can get a ford 302 V8 in the engine bay it shouldn't be too hard to drop in what is essentialy the same lump but avec blower...

Might find you need bonnet bulges etc for turbo clearance, but other than that how different can it be?

What you need is a man with both

An MX5 & a 323 Turbo & a spare engine in bits....

Right the block is the same, the head is similar, but difference is mainley the the 323 has a clockwork dizzy & the turbo points downwards on the 323 and I think the chassis needs cutting to fit it. Then of course there is the plumbing issue.

Apart from that the 323 has 7:1 compression ratio with the right turbo means heaps of power. Plus the rods are far stronger than the 5 ones.

The MX5 head is very similar & bolts straight onto the 323 head.

So if you'd like a complete engine in bits suitable for 280+ bhp I have one here.

Space allowing theres no reason you couldn't machine an adaptor plate up to orientate the turbo in a direction where it'd clear the bodywork.

the manifold is the problem, a good design but its major work to make it fit

Of course, you could just buy the Greddy MX5 turbo kit for £950 and save yourself a lot of hassle! The same sort of power increase as the HKS kit but a wee bit cheaper - the only trouble is its not very upgradable if you get the power bug and want to go further.

There were a few thread along these lines on the MX5 OC forum a while back, and the basic conclusion was that you'd have to get a manifold made up and a lot of custom pipework, and it'd be easier to buy an off-the-shelf kit that was actually developed for the MX5.

Along similar lines, i noticed that the Eaton supercharger used in the Cooper S is the same series as the one they use in the Jackson Racing supercharger kit for the MX5. You can pick up the SC on ebay pretty cheaply and I was hoping to adapt it to the MX5. Again it turned out that it'd require a LOT of custom work (mounting brackets, outlet manifolds etc) and would work out much most cost effective to buy a ready made package.
