I can't recall any feature films about either the life of Nelson or about Trafalgar. I am just reading a biography of his life and deeds and it seems to me to have all the ingredients for a stonking feature film. There's heroism, battles, innovative strategy, a failed marriage, love affairs, fighting ships under sail etc etc. I just think this would be a great movie. Why hasn't it been done? If anyone has the ear of Steven Spielberg or similar please pass this on!!

Must have a British scriptwriter and a Brit cast though (although one of the Captains at the battle of the Nile was American). If the Americans liked Robin Hood enough to make several films about him I reckon Nelson would go down a storm stateside.

It's probably something to do with Hardy kissing him...

Films & TV with Nelson in them - http://www.imdb.com/character/ch0029113/

You can perhaps ignore Blackadder, Monty Python and Carry on Jack.

Only one of them seems to be Trafalgar related and that was made in 1911.

It needs a Master & Commander style job done on it.

I agree, Nelson was/is a true 'British' hero in every accepted sense - probably why there's never any decent films made about him.....

ETA - It would be great to see the battles of St.Vincent, The Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar on the big screen, with 1st/2nd/3rd Rate Ships of the Line - instead of the lone frigates we usually see (frigates were considered too weak to form a battle fleet - used mainly for reconnaissance – one broadside from Victory would have pulverised it completely..)

Perhaps funded as part of a new Richard Sharpe TV adventure? - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sharpe%27s_Trafalgar

That is thought to be an urban myth. Nelson said "Kismet, Hardy". Kismet is thought to derive from either Turkish or Hindi-Urdu and loosely translates as Fate or Destiny. So no man love action would be required unless Russel T Davies gets involved...

Not true, 'Kismet' was used in Victorian times, to hide the fact that Nelson said 'kiss me' - it was a little too much for Victorian sensibilities.
He really did say ‘Kiss me, Hardy’

Trust me…..

Russell T David would manage to crowbar a man-on-man bum love scene into the vagina monologues, given half a chance.

Would love to see a film like that. Great era, and already been some good films. Waterloo, Master and Commander (which I thought was superb, and looking forward to a sequel), even Horatio Hornblower, and Sharpe!

Mind you, there are a good few films they could do with making with a decent budget. The Falklands, the SAS in Malaya, and so on are Ll ripe for a decent film with a decent budget.

There was a romantic adventure film made during the war,

A modern Master and Commander style version would be excellent - although Hollywood would probnably want either Hugh Grant or Tom Cruise to be Nelson.

Who'd be Lady Hamilton?
