We bought the wife's Clubman Cooper S back at Easter this year and instantly I was impressed by the go it had.

On the way home I struggled to keep up in my 2.0 MX5 when she booted it onto a short stretch up uphill dual carriage way and drive it myself it seemed really nippy.

Anyway, I don't drive it often but borrowed it a couple of weekends back and found that I was really disappointed with the performance. I convinced myself I'd built it up in my mind to be quicker than it was or that the two passengers was blunting it slightly, but no, it was definitely not as quick as it was.

Returning to today I dropped it off for a service at the local dealer, initially I was a little peeved to have had to fork out £300 for pads and discs on a 28k mile car but my displeasure changed to delight when I put my footdown.

And it's back! Such a different car to drive, noticeable in all gears, particularly at motorway speeds in sixth.

It had new plugs, so this is likely to help, but never have I experienced such a change following a service.
