I work a 7am-3pm day in security and contracted at a site, i do a solid shift of 8hrs without any official break.
Due to the role being a reception duty we are have to be at the desk at all times.
I am now getting the vibe that poping out for a cigarette is now starting to be frowned upon and they have hinted that as well(this is the client not the company i work for)
I have been on the HSE site regarding breaks and it says Quote=
Rest breaks at work
A worker is entitled to an uninterrupted break of 20 minutes when daily working time is more than six hours. It should be a break in working time and should not be taken either at the start, or at the end, of a working day.

What provisions do either my company or the client i am based with provide with regards to breaks, or is it a case of do the 8hrs, no breaks and shut the fk up.
Thanks Chris.

Unfortunatley the client is starting to grumble at the fact the i am going off for a break and as this little issue came about last year i get the feeling it will be then mentioned to my contracts manager.
Who i know will request that i don't go off and leave the desk.

Just give him a print out of the following:

Night Workers (Limit of 8 hours in 24)
http://www.legislation.gov.uk/uksi/1998/1833/regul...

Breaks - 20mins after 6hrs

Out of interest, how are they dealing with you being a lone worker - or are there other staff on site at the same time?

So do you have a catheter and colostomy bag or a commode then ? Or are toilet breaks allowed ?

I dont smoke and think it vile and time wasting at work. However you are entitled to a rest or break away from work and how you choose to use it, is your busines.

I would wager that the provider of the staff [your boss/company] has only costed for one body per shift and that no one considered a break. The usual "ah he can eat at his dek between visitors or similar.

You certainly need to voice a concern at no breaks before the client does. Therefore potentially defusing the situation.

My work place is an office with upto 1000 staff and duties are id checking and booking in/out of visitors and contractors etc...
I think it is more about the way they are going about it, building manager is saying that the senior building manager is not happy that the desk is being left unattended yet we have a buzz session for contractors on a friday morning every 2 weeks in a meeting room upstairs for half hour whilst the desk is being left unattended.
The whole issue is not consistant and i feel it is more about the building manager pressing the contracts manager into agreeing to something so it will keep the client happy.
Last year i involved the key accounts director with the issue and if things start to go the same way i shall be doing the same again.
Unfortunatley due to current employment and financial issues companies are facing you think that if you don't agree to everything you may find yourself on another site.
It's a shame as i have been here over 9yrs and have enjoyed it througout this time.
