Running report cured small fuel leak, tightened a bolt. Took the rear suspension apart to cure an annoying take off noise. A tinkling sound traced to loose dust cap on the drive shaft hub assembly. Hey it's all new so there are going to be a few shakedown issues.

Doubt I will ever sell this car is so pure and involving. I have not driven my new BMW for 3 months! What's it worth perhaps invested £7,000 in the mechanicals? I would like to get £4,000 - I know there is a song by the Everly Brothers but if you want a better than new e34 manual 535i which you won't have to spend a bean on for at least 10 years!

You sound like you're torn between keeping it and selling, Bogracer. If you do decide to sell, speak to Derin of bmwclassics.co.uk - he seems to carry out full renovations along the lines of what you've done, but he asks for (and gets) a fair bit more than the £4k you think yours would fetch.

I am just sounding out the possibilities. It's matching the cars with the enthusiasts. There are some really nice cars on the site, I guess he has quite a following. I had a 328i Cabriolet with a hardtop and struggled to get people out to it, but the first person that did come out in 3 months brought it on the spot! It elevating it above the bangers, I have tons of receipts and photographs of all the work - a say £7,000 spent I dare not add it up it's always more than you think or delude yourself, justifying it to the wife! I just enjoy the restoration project and the finished result. Looking at the prices on his site it perhaps worth a little more.

Been 'testing' the 535i on the Autobhan - ahem, still can't believe how little wind noise and how rock steady the car is for a 20 year old or even a new car - maxed on the flat GPS 147 MPH. Like Moses at the departing of the red sea!

Like Moses at the departing of the red sea! That is because of the window seals, instead of having a slot the windows slide between, the top of the window rubber overlaps to the otherside with a V groove in it, so as the window goes up this creates a tight seal as the seal folds itself over essentially onto the outside of the glass, very cool idea that works very well

Like Moses at the departing of the red sea! I know! They're amazingly fast cars huh? I sold an E34 530i last year(http://www.bmwclassics.co.uk/1989_BMW_E34_530i_Saloon/index.html ). It was quite a low spec car (so I guess not too many heavy extras to lug around). I knew it felt 'fast' when I was driving it but a good friend of mine (NOT ME!)had it up to a true 150 mph on his GPS...amazing! And that was just a six-cylinder 530 with the official Vmax on one supposedly 'only' 141 mph. http://www.bmwe34.net/E34main/Other/Models.htmInterestingly, those figures also show that a 540i is only 0.1s slower 0-60mph than the 3.6L M5...(not that surprising though I guess given the difference in engine size?). But then the difference begins to tell against the 3.8L (i.e 0.5s difference).

It the delivery and the feeling of involvement in the driving process.
I think the Manual 535i is quoted at 146 MPH. So it looks like the horses are still under the bonnet.
So much so my I have been using the car as my daily driver this summer, racking up 3,000 miles. It really can make rapid cross country progress, with great brakes and sporting yet comfortable suspension - and AC.
I have been driving other marques of the same vintage after reading the road tests of the time, just for fun. I think the nearest for me was a manual Carlton GSI 3000. Everything else was really off the pace, just being O.K rather than excellent.
A friend of a friend builds BMW race engines and cars and we are going to put the car on the rolling road to see what's what and adjust the map. He has built quite a few M30's for racing. The first steps are going to rolling road re-map, some better breathing and exhaust mods then maybe a ported and polished head. Should take the BHP up from 211 BHP to 260 - 280BHP.
I want to keep it looking stock and original and sleeper-ish.
The next stage is perhaps an Eaton Supercharger and Intercooler a really neatly engineered install to look OEM and will preserve the linear qualities of the engine. Which with sensible boost pressure is not stressing the engine should give another 50bhp. I will also have a switch to turn the unit on and off - for the sake of fuel consumption and polar bears.
The developed chassis deserves more power!

The project is heading towards 'Ronin' replica which was the main reason for buying the car I suppose. It's one of the car chase greats. The cars used were 535i SE and Sports with M Tec turbine alloys. I have got the exhaust note just right. I have tracked down the locations of the film and one day I might even take the car to Paris to take some pictures. It's all good healthy fun.
