I've posted a job advert on gumtree and received a load of cv's. So I've cancelled it down to approx 10 that I think might be appropriate - it's a picker/packer position.

Next step is to call them. Only 3 answer, 2 interviews and 7 i leave a message for. None of these call me back. Why not? Is it because they are on the dole and only have to prove they're sending out cv's?? And what's more, the ones that answer seem completely unenthusiastic and I have a feeling they will be no-shows.

This is my first time trying to employ people so maybe I'm being naive.

Any thoughts?

Like it or not (and I personally don't mind) this is why we seem to have a lot of Eastern Europeans etc. in our country.

I saw a TV programme where some 20 something lad, who'd never had a job in his life, said he'd never do a job like this i.e. picking/packing, unless being paid £20k pa rolleyes For some reason he just didn't understand that we all have to start somewhere so he continued to sponge and play on his XBOX. The rest of the applicants either dossed about or failed to show up for work regularly.

The most depressing bit was that all these people were English and despite being on the poverty line, thought they deserved better. How or why I'll never know frown

You will probably find that yours was one of a number of applications that they put in for and could have been successful in another role since applying. Common courtesy would say that they phone you back to say thanks, but no thanks though.

As for unenthusiastic people, this really pisses me off!! If they don't have a job now, why would they be unenthusiastic about the interest someone has shown in giving them a job?! I know I shouldn't be surprised by this, but the way some people react to the privilege of working really does annoy me. I was out of work for 2 weeks a few months back and interviewed for a job on almost 1/3rd of my previous salary so I wasn't out of work (luckily for me I didn't need to accept it!). These people need a kick up the arse, big time.
