I used to have Sky HD (signed up to it right at the start) and was happy with it for a few years. Eventually decided I'd be happy with the free channels and cancelled my Sky subscription and all was fine.

Fast forward to this year and my old Sky HD box is probably five or six years old and seems to be playing up. BBC1 and BBC2 either don't work at all (giving the 'No satellite signal is being received' message), or are very pixellated. A lot of other channels have stopped working recently - haven't been able to watch channel 5 for a few weeks now. The only channels that still work normally are ITV and Channel 4 SD. Channel 4 HD was working fine until earlier this week, now I get the 'No satellite signal...' message.

I'm sure this is a problem with my box as I live in a flat and nobody else has similar problems (I'm guessing there's a dish on the roof that provides a signal to all the flats? - there's a socket in each flat for Sky), so I think I need a Freesat box. I only have one input and I'm not bothered about recording, although HD would be nice.

What can I buy and plug in that will just work without requiring me to think too hard about it? All I want is to be able to get home from work and watch one of the regular (free) channels.

Freeview is a no go, for some reason I can't get any kind of signal where I live.

Thanks.

Humax seem to have the best reputation but everything you've said would make me look at the cable/dish/connectors first.

Any chance you could borrow a box from a friend/neighbour to see if that has the same problems?

Is the box made by thomson?

If so its probably the power supply capacitors begining to give out.

If you want an hd box then humax is probably the best
For cheap and cheeerful the £30 bush box at argos is ok for the money.

Before buying a new box, check the dish LNB is working...a cheap SKY type LNB is about £20.00.
