Cooper D / Cooper SD real world economy
Discussion
Have had a Cooper D as a courtesy car recently - over the day (42 miles) the OBC reckoned 48.8mpg. This was mostly A-road driving but also a fair bit in town. The OBC in my car over-reads by about 2mpg so I figured 46-47mpg actual.
If you do a lot of 60-70mph driving I reckon you could coax 60mpg out of it if you were gentle.

I've a Clubman Cooper D. Had it four weeks and done 2,500 miles.
I've averaged (according to my iPhone RoadTrip app (based on brim to brim full calculations) 54.4mpg.
My commute is a 90 mile round trip of 50% Motorway (cruise control at 70) and A/B roads with limits varying from 30 to 60. It gets a full work out.
I've just done a 300 mile trip this weekend, using cruise control at 65 all the way (90% motorway) and the OBC reckons on 66mpg for this trip. Based on how accurate the OBC has been so far that's probably a real 63/64mpg.

Drove these both back to back today. The SD is properly rapid. The 0-60 isn't earth shattering not least because of the need to change gear, but who really does 0-60 runs anyway? In gear acceleration is much more relevant IMHO and the SD is seriously quick from 30 - 80 through the gears - you can be doing licence losing speeds without realising it very easily indeed.
Both are in budget, and the difference in tax is about £30 / month plus the extra fuel the S would use.
The D is still a nicely swift car and realistically it is going to be used mostly for commuting, but I wonder whether I would be gutted to lose the extra grunt.

I've had a 2011 Model Cooper D for 8000 miles and averaged 48mpg according to the OBC. 65% crawling through London, 25% slowish dual carriageways and 10% motorway cruising.
I drive it in an 'enjoyable' manner (it's a lease car so not overly concerned about it!) - if I drive like my mum, it'll creep up to the high 50s but it's too painful for any long term use! I did once manage a 72mpg average on a 50 mile motorway trip.

Thanks for the input folks. I've ordered a Cooper D with a few extras - the 99g/km keeps it at 13% BIK for the foreseeable whereas the SD will be up to 16/17% in the next couple of years. The saving in lease cost and tax will cover my £100/m parking costs so overall the extra grin factor wasn't really justifiable as the car will basically be for commuting only.

Great thread thanks op I'm consdering a Countryman D or Sd when I come to change my current Golf 2.0 TDI sport so this a relevant thread for me interested to find out more about preformance differences
What engine do you have in the Golf?I found the Countryman D to be frustratingly slow - only 110BHP lugging round much more weight than a MINI hatch means it's no rocketship. I imagine it'd be fine if you're on the motorway all the time but if you do a lot of A-road work (i.e. need enough performance to overtake on a regular basis) I wouldn't recommend it. It'll also not be particularly economical in this sort of situation as you'll be ragging it the whole time.
Can't speak for the Countryman SD but having had a run in the SD hatch and Countryman I'd say the extra 33BHP (and a lot more torque) is worth the extra outlay. I'm still not convinced the performance deserves the "S" badge though - it would if it had the 177BHP version of the engine, but then would probably be quicker than the petrol version...

The golf is the 140bhp engine that was the worry I had about the Countryman D to be honest I would imagine that when we change it will be for an SD just need a lottery win now as I recently specced one up and got it to just under £30k!!!!
