I was aware of that particular conundrum, I thought Asterix was saying that Argentina was avoiding bi-lateral talks not tri-lateral talks.
To all those moaning that the islanders are British and it is their home...well we'll depopulate an island of its people when it suits us:

What has that got to do with Argentina or anyone else? It's a decision to be made by the British Government.
The Argentinian government have made a claim on Salisbury, so we've issued compulsory purchase orders and we're kicking everyone out....

It has nothing to do with Argentina but everything to do with one of the strands of the current argument. Those claiming the British Govt have to respect (nay defend to the death) the wishes of the resident British population where the Falklands are concerned...that the islanders wishes are paramount and that we should take note of the recent referendum blah blah blah.
It's not rocket science.

That's right. Those claiming the British Govt have to respect (nay defend to the death) the wishes of the resident British population where the Falklands are concerned...that the islanders wishes are paramount and that we should take note of the recent referendum blah blah blah.

"British Govt have to respect (nay defend to the death) the wishes of the resident British population from FOREIGN powers..."
No one has said that the British Government can't go and turf them off when Oil is discovered....just that no one else has the right to do it.

We got that wrong. It doesn't mean we should get this one wrong as well.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Depopulation_of_Chago...

The inhabitants wishes are paramount...until we decide money/oil is actually a tad more paramount or the interests of the USA must be recognised etc etc etc

Yeah...that about sums it up actually.

None of which though has the slightest thing to do with Argentina. The inhabitants wishes are paramount...until we decide money/oil is actually a tad more paramount or the interests of the USA must be recognised etc etc etc
I certainly can't think of any scenario whereby appeasing Argentina will be of any benefit to the UK? Maybe you have a more vivid imagination than me. Even if we didn't think that it was worth keeping - too expensive/no oil whatever, why on Earth would we "give" it to Argentina? We'd simply give independence to FI and tell them that they are on their own now.

If the only thing that dictates ownership of an island is proximity, does that mean we can claim the Faroe Islands? They aren't even near Denmark!
I don't think proximity is the only issue. It might form one element in the things that should be considered. Before fully asserting our rights over the Falklands in 1833, it should be remembered we hadn't colonised the place for the preceding 47 years and, prior to that, had only co-habited with the French/Spanish.
Whether the British were the first to discover or colonise the Falklands would be in dispute with other nations.
In those senses, I don't see we have any god given right to claim a moral or geographical ascendancy over the Falklands.
People will of course have differing opinions over what we should do. If it came to it, and war was threatened or instigated, I don't think the negatives of war and bloodshed would be justified by our steadfast refusal to release the Falklands. Other people will view it differently.
In any case, it would be incredibly unlikely that we would hand it to them in the face of threats, as it would be political domestic suicide.
I don't see why we are expected to behave differently to the rest of the world.
Hawaii is some 2500miles from the US mainland but no one is suggesting they return it to the indigenous population.
Spain has the canary islands.
Denmark has Greenland and the Faroe Islands.
Turkey and Greece have their dispute over Cyprus.
Why exactly are we supposed to capitulate? If Scotland votes for Independence then we'd be expected to let them have it and there'd be uproar if we didn't so why should we ignore what the Falklanders want?

I can't keep restating my position time and time again so I wont...suffice to say that I've never-ever advocated "giving" the Falklands to anyone, Argentina included.
Falklands-Schmalklands...You're not against negotiating a settlement over your car, where I get to drive it every Sunday?

I'm never selling that car as people were injured in it by a reckless 3rd party and I now find that I couldn't bear to lose it....EVER.
However, I've now invested in the car, it's become a classic and the values are rocketing. I also found some (black) gold in the glovebox.Just wish the bloke next door would stop trying to key it.
