tips for restoring chromed side rails on 4x4
Discussion
my 4x4 has some chromed side rails on the steps that have suffered some minor surface discolouration due to road salt etc which doesnt seem to want to come out by hand. next step is possibly DA6 and some pads, what sort of metal restorer and pad compound would be advised?
Any help appreciated thanks.

What 4x4 is it?
From certain vehicles ive worked on the Britemax metal polishes are fantastic. Gentle persuasion with 00 gauge wire wool may be needed however, you can apply Britemax metal polishes and if the vehicle is kept in a garage leave it overnight. The polishes continue working all the time they are in contact with the metal.

Dont use wire wool on chrome.
As for pads etc, use an older one (rather than throw it away) and the compounds you have.
Why spend more money when what you have will work?
(Chrome can be soft so start with low cut first, 2-3 hits before moving up a grade)
I did chrome on a Stag using 106fa and lake pad.

00 gauge wire wool is the very least aggressive variant and as said. Gentle persuasion rather than ham fisted like many would be works a treat. Use only if needed. Try Britemax metal polishes on there own first and I think you will be pleasantly surprised. You would create more potential markings using a machine polisher with a wrong choice of pad tbh even if using a fine grade polish, the pad can inflict slight markings.
