I'm going to apply for a trainee train driver position. I've got some really good experience behind me, but i'm still only 22 years old. I was wondering if HR would look at my age and bin me at first sight
Far more likely to look at where you live and bin you if you don't live near a depot (or demonstrate willingness to move)essayer said:

Well I can't speak for the TOC that you are applying for but my company has taken a lot of new drivers on over the last 5 years or so. A lot of the new entrants are ex forces in their 40's, also quite a few engineers, a few ex police. I can't think of any who are younger than 30. Almost a third of each course are guards 'upgrading' to drivers, these tend to be a bit younger. My advice would be to join the railway as a guard for a couple of years and apply internally when driver vacancies come up.
Look here for Southern......https://www.southern.candidata.co.uk/search.aspx
Keep a close eye on it, they recently (2 months ago) advertised for trainee drivers, but based at Selhurst.
You need to be within about a half hours drive or commute from your base station/depot.
First Capital Connect are the other rail company that use that route on a regular basis, and also Gatwick Express which are part of the Southern franchise.
As for the job, you dont need any particular qualifications to apply, but you need to pass a fairly intensive assessment. I have just passed their engineering assessment, and apparently the driver one is more difficult with regards to the concentration test. There are a lot of websites that talk about the selection process, its worth having a google.
