I purchased a new Denon DM37 and Monitor Audio BR1's to replace my old separates with Mordaunt Short floor standers.

The speakers are on stands..I forget the name but again award winners from What Hi-Fi a couple of years ago. This set-up has won awards with What Hi-Fi etc and I was expecting a really nice sound.

I find the sound quite muddy. I am not running any EQ's to boost bass. The rear facing bass ports on the speakers are blocked (with the supplied plugs) and the speakers are not placed with their backs in the corners of the room.

I find the bass a bit clumsy and muddy. Does anyone have any suggestion on how I could set things up differently?

I remember when I was thinking about getting one of these (went for separates in the end) that quite a few reviews mentioned the bass was a bit heavy. Are you sure there's no default extra bass/loudness that's turned on? If not, then if it has presets then try something like 'pop' or 'jazz', this should boost the mid and high frequencies a bit to even out the response. If not, and you say your speakers are away from walls/corners, sounds like you'll have to just turn down the bass a notch or two and go from there.
