I wonder if anyone can help. In my kitchen I have the aforementioned Sony LCD TV (< 1 year old)connected to a Humax Freesat RX via HDMI. I don't use the TV audio, instead have connected the analogue audio out(RCA) from the Humax to a small Monitor Audi iPod dock that has an aux input.

Through the separate wall-mounted speakers this gives a very adequate kitchen set up. Of late, however, SWMBO has been in the habit of watching i-player or DVD's from her laptop and has connected it to the TV via HDMI. Now the picture side is OK but to get audio (and not TV audio)requires replumbing.

Now I realised there would be no path from TV to Humax to i-dock but I did assume that the RCA audio out on the TV would just mean plugging that into the i-dock after disconnecting the Humax. But no. The analogue audio out seems to be inhibited if HDMI is connected. Is this how it's supposed to be? Anyone had experience?

The only audio out available is the headphone jack on the TV (the headphone jack on the laptop is inhibited too when HDMI is connected). So I've been thinking of alternatives. Ideally, for cost reasons, I only want to improve the audio connectivity by using a mini system with more than one audio in but this won't help if I can't get audio out from the TV. This, therefore, seems to leave me with the only option of going AV amp for HDMI switching - a Pioneer 921 has been suggested (£329) and it certainly has its attractions but it's an expensive sledgehammer to crack this nut plus it's really a little too large!

If anyone has any other suggestions I'd be open to them. Got to keep the i-phone/i-touch/i-pod cpapbility though.

Nothing wrong with using the headphone out to connect to an amp.
Unfortunately the Sony's do lack any other audio out capabilities, other than optical. Unless the SCART socket has audio out?

Well that's what I have to do at the moment but it's a pain and there's spaghetti everywhere! I have tried a scart to RCA adaptor but that too doesn't appear to have any active audio if HDMI is connected.

You can get mini jack to RCA cables. Then plug that into ipod dock and all audio would from TV would play on it.
